I’ve seen Northwest trade guns painted blue and red. Were any of them painted black that we know of?
We know the British painted marine guns with an asphaltum finish, so it's possible, but that's an awfully low-grade finish for a trade gun.I’ve seen Northwest trade guns painted blue and red. Were any of them painted black that we know of?
I’ve not seen surviving examples of NW guns painted different colors. I THINK I remember a published reference once that said there was documentation for light stock wood to be painted brown to look less white. There were fancy painted Carolina guns.I’ve seen Northwest trade guns painted blue and red. Were any of them painted black that we know of?
I think you are referring to certain sea service muskets. Marine muskets were a different animal. We know the British painted marine guns with an asphaltum finish, so it's possible, but that's an awfully low-grade finish for a trade gun.
I haven’t seen it and don’t know why anyone would do that.Let’s expand this some. Would black paint have been used on any type of traditional muzzleloader? Seems like I saw a southern mountain rifle painted black once but I don’t remember where.

Do you happen to have the issue information available? It’s been a few years since I subscribed.T.C. Albert had an article about painted NW trade guns in Muzzleloaader magazine a year or two ago.
Happened? Yes. Commonplace? Now that’s a whole nuther bag of worms.Thanks.
I remember now, it was at a show this past summer. I’m thinking what I saw may have been stained black or was just dark to begin with and turned darker with age.
I don’t have any desire to paint or stain one. I was just wondering if it was common.
The Rolling Stones had theirs painted black. Yes they are that old.
Back on topic, I’ve not seen or heard of trade guns painted black. But black with yellow vines painted on would look good. Creative, fun, not replicating historical examples.
Sorry, Clark but I no longer have that issue. However, you can send a PM to Jason Gatliff since he was on this forum a day or two ago.T.C. Albert had an article about painted NW trade guns in Muzzleloaader magazine a year or two ago.
