Patch lube makes a difference

At the range I soak (saturate) a ticking strip and cut it at the muzzle, the strip is kept in a plastic bag.

While hunting I have a strip, maybe 6" long, pre-soaked, in a small plastic bag in my shooting bag for reloads if I need it, not HC/PC but it works for me.

As I stated in an earlier post I am currently using bear oil, up till last year I used TOW mink oil. I do use an overpowder wad when hunting. If I see some sort of small, watertight period container that will hold the soaked patch strip I'll pick it up. Maybe an empty musket cap tin would be tight enough?

Then I take my finger and thumb and press and work that small amount of lube into the patch until I FEEL the rough texture of the cloth patch. Once that's done I put them into a #11 cap tin which I've antiqued in the fire and they are ready to be used when ever.

Note: What I label as improper, may be proper in a bore that's aged and had been unloved at some point :haha:

Those of you who lube your own patches with LV or anything else for that matter, do you carry the patch material dry and lube in the field, do you soak the material ahead of time with your choice lube? And if you do it in the field, how do you maintain consistent application, avoid making a mess, and do it efficiently on a hunt?

Spit for most shooting...otherwise I carry a small tin of lube (beeswax and olive oil)unless my gun has a lube hole. I make a softer mix for winter and a stiffer mix for summer...Less lube is better and no lube will work too....I don't lube maxi balls at all....
I carry a small 1/2 ounce bottle of MAW solution for cleaning between shots and field cleaning....Sometimes I just use spit....

I always lube patches as I need them.

That is no doubt a PC approach. Do you find it makes any difference in accuracy if you shoot the load right away while the patch is still wet, vs. later after the patch may have dried out?

i've used all kinds of stuff for patch lube. i do not use homemade stinky stuff, animal grease/oil or Ballistol.

GoJo hand cleaner works very well: So does Goop. However, patches prelubed with both deteriorate over time.

About one year ago i found two 30 year old containers of Weath R Seal in my junk. Stuff makes a superb patch lube that works equally well in both summer and winter.
