What are your recommendations for a good pewter tankard at a reasonable price? My wife was looking at a Jas. Townshend one that was about $33; are there better choices out there that will be correct for the mid-18th century?

I think there are alot of the faux pewter ones -- probably want those as they are not toxic and are robuster methinks personally. Townshend's descriptions are good.

You might do an Ebay search for pewter tankard. At present, there are numerous Sheffield, England made pewter tankards that will likely fit your needs and be safe to use, at reasonable prices. Also, Steiff made (USA) tankards should fit safety and timeframe needs.

Mrs Coot buys pewter (real pewter, not the armetal that some try to pass off as pewter) at low end antique shops and thrift stores.
Nice pieces in good condition that are PC in form go onto the trade blanket, most of the stuff gets melted down to make into period buttons. It's cheaper to recycle than to buy new ignots. If you get to the thrift stores or antique malls ahead of her you might find a deal.

AGREED. = Around TX, the GOODWILL & SALVATION ARMY stores seem to get LOTS of tankards & JEFFERSON CUPS, that are cheap enough to "melt down".
(Jefferson cups are usually either 39 or 99 cents each here in SA, with tankards at 2-4.oo.)

yours, satx

...where you'll also find wine goblets applenty you can use. Silverplate usually. Cheap. Wedding gifts or props or something I suppose...

Check out antique malls. The one near us is really high on good cast iron but they sell Sheffield pewter for the same price as cheap India made pewter. I buy up all of the Sheffield I can get and resell it for a good profit. Try Good will stores etc. as well. :idunno:

Thanks. Since my better half will be the one drinking out of it, she wants one that is brand-new. :idunno: She just wants to make sure that nobody used it for anything toxic or disgusting in the past.

The COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG GIFT SHOP, near the Visitor's Center, has "made on-site" tankards for sale.
(OR did the last time that we were there.)

Fwiw, BOILING SOAPY WATER, with 1/2 cup laundry BLEACH added, & THROUGHLY RINSED with BOILING WATER will clean such things thoroughly & sufficiently even for my "super picky" (and "weak of stomach") daughter, Noemi.

just my OPINION, satx

Really? What in the known universe, worst case, can survive a thorough cleaning as was mentioned!? Nothing I tell you. Come on now!

:idunno: in these cases, I just say, "Yes dear." I do enough to annoy her as it is, so in this case, an argument would cost more than a new tankard. :surrender:

And to her credit, when I was hemming and hawing over buying that pistol at Whispering Pines, she said, "Well, why don't you just get it?" An attitude like that is worth a tankard now and then.
