So, please help me through this one.
I purchased an item last month ($125) from a seller here. It arrived in the padded case but a vital plastic part was broken and appeared to me that the break was previously glued together. (My son was with me opening the case and pointed out right away the broken part).
Seller was informed right away and he said to return it and get refunded.
Now seller wants to file a damage claim with USPS before refunding my money. (I understand that can take a long, long time and I need the money back.)
Is this refund practice common?

I agree with 64Springer, all on the seller. It sounds like he may have misrepresented the item. The USPS claim can be denied or he may only receive partial compensation and it can take forever. I believe you are within your rights to insist on a complete refund from the seller and he needs to take his chances with USPS.

The seller has the responsibility to package the product in a manner to eliminate damage during shipment. Period. If it arrives damaged it is his fault. Period. One of the reasons I haven’t purchased any of the items I’ve seen on this site that interest me. Amazon takes returns no questions asked!!!!

He should refund you asap and then usps is on him, if he's honest.
Outing him to the group if he's dishonest would be a public service to the rest of us and be his compensation for his dishonesty.
Hope it works out for you!

I am in agreement. I will wait a bit for his response before taking that next step.

I personally feel this issue impacts the credibility of honest marketing here, unfortunately. At first the seller stated that when I returned the thing he would refund me my money, including return shipping costs. He said he should have looked it over more carefully before deciding to sell it. (I have the conversation copied on my computer as well as in our private messages.)
Now he tells me to “be patient” and I will get my money back. I asked “when?” And got no answer.
As of last night, Seller has my $125 and
I also spent $20.45 to return the item.
I never expected this treatment from a seller here.
This is a great example of how NOT to do business.

Bad behavior needs to be called out, publicly. There are two sides to this story and if all you say is true he needs to explain himself, publicly also. If that is how he does business then he can state that, publicly, and let the buyers beware.

How many days has it been? Purchase, receipt of damaged goods, notification to seller?

Could be the ole check is in the mail? I need timeline before judgement. Sorry me.

Its only a matter of time for a person that does wrong will get their comeuppance!😐

The seller has been reading this and knows that he is about to be called out. The same happened to me on this site and when he was called out he coughed up the money. The difference was that he had already sold item to another person and took money. Everything worked out in the end.

I just mailed (2-3 days late) payment for an item and feel bad about that but LIFE gets in the way. Hoping the seller is cool with it, he has not responded to "the checks inthe mail". Got a tracking # so I will know when he gets it. I would REALLY feel bad if I had to withdraw an offer.

Let us know once you've gotten the refund.

I also don't think it's ethical filing a claim on a part that was previously repaired. And good luck with a USPS insurance claim - they fight tooth and nail to not pay out.
