took my new to me 54 lyman GPR left hand flintlock to the range. Call her patience as I have none and it took three weeks for the rifle to get to me in the mail. GRRRRR....Yea I know, patience. so guy next to me is shooting a 16in AR with scope at 50 yds I was shooting 50 yards as well. He was getting 5 inch groups with it at best which really shocked me. We stopped to check targets and I looked for my patches, found 5 perfect but dirty ones and said hum i will just reuse these I guess and he laughed as he was checking his target. I then put out 2 clay pigeons at 100 yards and ask him to spot and see where I hit. My bad, I was only shooting 40 gr 3f and knew it was going to be low. He told me on the first shot 4-5 inches low. Said thanks and good to go. 2 of 2 no more clay pigeons and I was using the used patches that he watched me reuse.

I looked over at him, his deer in the headlights look and he said "wow, with open sights as well, you are outshooting me with my scope at 50 yards." I smiled went out picked up my target and patches and said "humm, patches still good, might as well use them again" He put his scoped rifle away in a case and went home.

I guess these 54 left handed Lyman GPR flintlocks can shoot huh? Am I really being cheap using the same patch 3-4 times?

Maybe but do you use a folded piece of paper to hold your priming powder because you don't want to buy a small priming horn/flask? Do you use an old ketchup bottle to keep your powder in cause you bought your powder in bulk and you don't want to buy a powder horn? There is someone like that where I shoot, and he's proud of it. :shocked2:

Sure your "frugal",,, now go back, dig out the lead and reuse it.
Modern shooters recycle their brass!!!!!!!!

You just answered a question for me because I have a handfull of used pathes from my last trip to the range and they look perfect, just a little frayed on the edges I think I'll shoot them next time I go shooting.

Nice shootin. :hatsoff:

Demonstrations are the most convincing way to win over others.

The patches I'm going to try out ARE spit patches. Just a little fraying on the edges, this is using 80grns of KIK 3fff. .024 patch. 490 rb. with a Green Mountain barrel with .12 grooves. Starts smooth with a slap on the short starter. :)

Once, at Leeds Rifle Range in SC, I outshot a scoped Ruger Mini 14 at 100 yards. I was using an unscoped Mauser 96 "Swede" dated 1899. Both of us were bench rested.

The Ruger owner did not look pleased.

Of course not, you made him look like a fool by outshooting him with an 'ancient gun' with 'limited sights'. His mini 14 with a scope was likly something he was all proud of and likely he was sure he was gonna show up the guy with the old gun. For the price he paid on that scoped Ruger he could have had 2-4 Mausers and you know he knows it.

Its awfully fun to out-shoot the latest & greatest "tacti-cool" offerings with an "antique!" :hatsoff:

i do love it when i outshoot the moderns at my local range with my long rifle.

most people seem to think all traditional muzzleloaders are smooth bored, not really sure where they get the idea but the #1 question i get is: "is that rifled?".

oh and yes, your cheap. but... you could be cheaper!
