Yes, there were brass mounted Hawkens. I think this one is in the Cody Firearms Museum, though they did not have it out when I examined and measured their Hawkens a few years ago. This photo is from Jim Gordon's book. I built a rifle from these pictures, mine shown above. I left off the patch box. It was for a young woman. You can right click twice to enlarge the photo.

Beautiful work, Herb! I’ll bet that was one happy gal when she got that rifle.

Sorry I asked the question. I guess as a long time member of NMLRA and been shooting flints since before you were born, I deserved your sarcasm. Farking jerk.

My mentor loaned me 2 books on Hawken rifles by the same author about 12 years ago.
IIRC the name on the barrel gives many clues as to the time frame.
I think... but aren't certain, the book spoke of barrels bought from different vendors, at different times.
I'll see if I can borrow them again.
Dear Eterry I think I still have J. D .Bairds books but dislike Hawkens . I made two for patrons but wouldn't lug one anywhere .But then few would fool with Scots Snaphance's or Turkish Guns ? .All a matter of' taste' or lack of it . I once wrote for his magazine but he wrote like a Bulldozer driver which he was . little details like historical accuracy got er altered . Charles Hanson set the historical truth strait but by then the" Gotta get a Hawken "cult was firmly tooled up to exaggerate its place in History . Biard was at a NMLRA Western R vous on the Flathead River . Only R vous I got too via a freight train out of Spokane to Whitefish Mo ( Curtesey of Burlington Northerns excellent service . I was greeted by a Marshal with his riot gun but it was simply to check see if some cad who shot some one in Spokane had caught the freight . & I later visited Hansons Museum of the Fur Trade at Chadron Neb. Do you want the Books ?
Cheers Rudyard
