I had my TC Hawken with a gm 50 drop-in barrel to the range yesterday. It was preserved after the last cleaning with Sheath. I forgot to run an alcohol patch through the bore to get out the Sheath. I loaded and fired 10 rds and noticed that there was much less BP residue in the barrel than normal. My load is 90 gr 3F, .570/.018 PRB. I have no idea why but will try this a few more times to see if I got it right.

This has been a very informative read, thank you guys for it. Question: do any of you use the barricade wipes for a bore preservative? I am thinking that I could cut a patch from them and use it that way.....Terry

I used to get orange goo out of my ML's when heavily lubing with bore butter so I changed how I use it. After I clean my rifles with soap and water I run several dry patches through the bore then blow hot air with a blow dryer down the bore. Then I'll run a bore butter smeared patch(not too much) down the bore then follow that up with one or two dry patches. I think it leaves a light coating of bore butter behind. I believe my problem in the past was too much bore butter. On occasion I will use olive oil and sometimes nothing at all as I'm confident that the hair dryer has done a good job of drying the bore.I always run a patch down the bore before I take a rifle out to shoot and have gotten into the habit of checking for rust with a patch if my guns have sat un-used for awhile.

If you mean a "wiping patch" they would probably work but if you mean a patch for a roundball I rather doubt that the fabric would be strong enough to take the loads imposed by firing a charge of powder under it.

That's why a good shooting patch will have a strong close weave.

I can't answer the Baricade question, but I use Ballistol straight from the can for a preservative.
