Blade was buggy spring. Stays sharp and gets used a good deal.

All best,
Richard.

Wow, that's a nice piece, indeed! A Very nice representation of a somewhat plain Dirk, though with some nice engraving and carving. I LIKE it!! :hatsoff:

Pleased you like it Gents.

Gus, what you say about the targe is true.

Targs didn't altogether go out of use though,.................they just wound up being used as lids for barrels!
Quite a few rescued ones were found being used as such.
There is one in Eilean Donnan castle that was saved from this fate.

Richard.

Got to admit I have not heard that one before. :haha:

Of course since the wooden Targe bodies were sometimes made of gluing two thicknesses of wood together (something like plywood), perpendicular to the grain of each part, I bet those were very strong barrel lids.

I was curious if they made any from fabric laminar like the Romans but have not read any that have. Fabric Laminar can stop a musket when made properly and being lighter.

In a word, nope. Brass plates were frequently installed on targes and may have deflected balls fired at long range but, in spite of a description of one made to be bullet proof, none have been found that truly were.

Well to my eye, and I have looked at quite a few antique dirks, it is a perfectly normal size and proportion.

I know you. Just dawned on me who you are !

MacRob,

LOL!

My regular user name wouldn't work here, so just used initials.

Now, I'm trying to think where we know each other from? I am on a few forums and get all cottered up at times!

Richard/Pukka B.

We talked a couple of years ago through, I thought, this forum but it could have been elsewhere.
