Gus, what you say about the targe is true.

Targs didn't altogether go out of use though,.................they just wound up being used as lids for barrels!
Quite a few rescued ones were found being used as such.
There is one in Eilean Donnan castle that was saved from this fate.

Got to admit I have not heard that one before. :haha:

Of course since the wooden Targe bodies were sometimes made of gluing two thicknesses of wood together (something like plywood), perpendicular to the grain of each part, I bet those were very strong barrel lids.

I was curious if they made any from fabric laminar like the Romans but have not read any that have. Fabric Laminar can stop a musket when made properly and being lighter.

In a word, nope. Brass plates were frequently installed on targes and may have deflected balls fired at long range but, in spite of a description of one made to be bullet proof, none have been found that truly were.
