so what lead alternatives are out there for shot
I have not had to buy any shot but need to do so soon

bismith,tungstun,steel are a few.

what ya shootin' at with it?

I don't know of any substitute shot that can be used safely in the soft steel barrels used in Mlers. Lead is it. Even plated lead shot needs to be put in some kind of shot cup to protect your barrels.

There are some new, replica, Chrome lined shotguns that can take some harder shot, but the chrome will only last so long if you abuse it with hard shot. Follow the manufacturer's advice when using these guns.

If you mean non-toxic shot, for bare bore muzzleloaders without shot cups, EcoTungsten is an actual lead substitute in every respect...it is expensive...but usually just used for waterfowl and duck/goose shotgun shells have gotten ridiculously expensive in recent years as well so its not as bad as you might first think.
And the good news is since it is ballistically identical to lead, you can do your pattern testing ewith a lead equivalent, then a couple shots with EcoTungsten to be sure and you're good to go.
I've pattern tested E/T #6's against my normal hard magnum #6 lead shot, and it actually patterns noticeably better in terms of the number of pellets in a turkey head at 40 yards.

If you're going to use a modern plastic shot cup, then most anything will do

If you are going to go with steel/iron shot you have to go with a modern plastic shot cup and it needs to be one that is specifically designed for steel shot. WW AA's will not protect the bore from steel shot because not only are they too shallow to completely enclose the shot charge they are thinner and made of a less dense plastic than the ones that are built with steel shot in mind. Also use an over powder card or you will get some serious plastic build-up in the bore.

in my 12 g db muzzleloader
turkey primarily is the game, thought i hope to do some other bird hunting with it too
thanks for the info

If you don't mind my asking, if you're primarily going after turkey, what is the interest in using a lead alternative?

Lead is THE real deal...and although more expensive during the past few years, it's still by far the cheapest of them all...and its performance is beyond question, the standard against which all others are measured.

I used hard magnum lead #6 shot in a .62cal Flint smoothbore and it's killed them dead at 40 yards. I tested nickle plated #6 shot last fall and am planning to use it this spring for turkey...they put a few more pellets into the target

curuiosity as much as anything else. Thinking ahead to that possible time when lead shot might be outlawed lol

Instead of sitting by, Passively, Waiting for the crazies of this world to outlaw lead shot, or all lead, as back-door gun control, why don't you become involved in fighting them? The Science is in our favor- not theirs! Lead ingested by adults is NOT toxic- the body has the ability to pass it on out the system quickly enough. Its only toxic to infants, whose brains are still developing, because our digestive system tends to store heavy metals in fatty tissues. The Brain is made up of lots of fatty tissues when we are young. It takes prolonged ingestion of lead-- usually lead paint chips--- ( because lead tastes sweet!) ---- to cause permanent brain damage, and lead based paint has been outlawed since the 1950s.

After 60 years, and Billions spent on lead based paint removal and abatement, its just not a problem that is was back then. All VA home loans, for instance, require a lead paint inspection, and removal of the lead from the floor to at least 4 feet above the floor before the loan will be approved to buy an existing house. Considering how many older homes have been bought( or apartment buildings) with VA loans, in addition to all the older structures subject to very strict City Codes requiring similar paint removal, and its very difficult to find a home that is not " historic" that has lead based paint still in it. Even those homes now have acquired several layers of modern, lead-free, latex paints on top of the old stuff, giving them a modicum of protection. Its now been years since I have seen a house sold here that had a lead paint issue. Mostly,They are old Victorian homes in the country, that have stayed in a family for years, without much interior work done, and are sold very cheap, because they require extensive work, that will remove all the lead based paint from the old plaster, and woodwork. Its not unusual these days for the land to be worth more than the house, and the house is either burned, or bull-dozed, and replaced entirely with a new structure.

As for lead shot being a danger to wild life- even Glen Sanderson, the original author of the preliminary study used by Anti-gun forces in Congress to ban lead shot for Waterfowl hunting, has since testified that there were errors in his calculations of mortality, and false assumptions in his models, that were caught and found to totally explain his preliminary findings. In short, even he no longer believes that ingested lead shot contributes to mortality of ducks and geese!

Stop " Exploring " lead shot alternatives, and recognize the nature of the battle over your right to own a firearm.

Do something about it.

Educate your friends and family about the lies being told. The more people know that Congress passed oppressive legislation based on false data, and lies, the quicker people will resist more such legislation and begin to understand the real agenda of the people pressing to outlaw lead shot, and lead bullets.

RIGHT ON !! Do NOT let them ban our lead! Add to the above Paint info that for several years the Hunters for Hungry project was put on hold due to supposed lead risk, but a study showed NO RISK of lead poison from eating shot game. Unfortunately a significant number of TONS of meat was wasted prior to the study outcome. This included testing several generations of families that most of their meat diet came from game animals.
I grew up on hunted meat in Wyoming without more than the average brain damage...

Well I did my part. Bought a sack of #6 shot from the folks that were mentioned above. We'll see if I can get a turkey load worked up in that flint fowler I have... :hmm:
