I have read some posts that folks are using square cut patches for round balls. I load via a bullet board and plan to use aprox 1 inch square patches vs. cutting them at the board like I used to do. Will I notice any difference in accuracy for recreational shooting at 50 or 100 yds?

I took 3rd place in a bp shoot back in June with my 50cal GPR flinter, shootin' square patches. 25, 50 and 70yd tagets off hand. First and second place shooters used inlines

I've been using square patches for years, I still can't hit the barn from the inside. :blah: :kid: they shoot just as good.

I have tested patching cut at the muzzle VS round cut patches VS square cut patches and I can not see any difference. I have used square cut patches for 25 years. All of my rifles shoot around 2" at 100yds when I do my part, so from my perspective square cut patches work.

I too use square cut patches - nothing fancy, just cut a square from the strip of cloth hanging on my hunting bag .

Add me to the chorus. I have used all types and never found any difference. Whatever is most convenient for you.

Somewhere I read that tests showed little difference between use of square and round patches. When I precut my own from strips of ticking, I usually take the squares (first cut) and trim the corners to make them octagonal--loads a little better.

I use octagonal patches, 0.010 inch "handkerchief linen" from the local fabric store :)

When I'm not using the pillowticking strip to cut them at the muzzle, I use dodecahedron cut patches, 0.0178" thick pillowticking. :blah:

In all seriousness, I had always tried to cut them round by hand, as I thought the extra material would cause problems. Guess not. Looks like I'll be saving some time and just start cutting them square.

I've never noticed any difference between square and round. :results:

I use triangle patches myself...

Put me down for "all the above".

These were all cut on a ball block from larger strips as they would be at the muzzle.

I notice that my thicker patches tend to form corners across the weave when using ball blocks. Gun doesn't seem to care . . . I certainly don't.

Square 'er round makes no difference to my shooting, but then it's my shooting. I do cut round patches using a modified hole saw chucked into my drill press. Makes it faster in matches. Think it's 1.25" hole saw, & fits my .54s fine, but I do havta run around to pick up patches tossed all over the shop when the hole saw gets filled w/ precuts.

For years I simply refused to believe that the square patch could possibly be any good! Even down-right stuborn about even trying them.
Then one day I got lazy, in a hurry to shoot, and cut a bunch square.
Behold,,,, for me the square is no different than "cut at the muzzle". I'm converted! And a "square shooter" to boot!. :m2c:

Square patches have an advantage of little waste, if you cut at the muzzle you end up with a strip with a bunch of holes in it. (VBG) The square patch utilizes all the strip for an economical yield on pillow ticking.

I think the same amount of material is still being consumed...it's just that with square patches, the unneeded extra material is simply taking a ride in the bore instead of being left on the strip...it doesn't add to or detract from the execution of the shot so I'm not sure theres a difference in waste or savings

Yep...square, round, octagonal, cut at the muzzle, or cut into little hearts...it all gets thrown out anyway :)
I generally cut mine into squares, then lop off the corners...but not because it adds or detracts anything while shooting.
The only reason I do it is because an octagon has just that much less material I have to work the lube into after precutting.
No biggie any way you prefer though.

Been lubing patches by the srtip and cutting them square for years. Put a few marks in the win column like that too. Personal preference would dictate this one, the ball and the rifling don't care as long as they are covered. :peace:
