i got another barrel question here. Rice Barrels is offering a gun makers special. same barrel unpolished with square bottom rifling as opposed to radius bottom rifleing, $60.00 cheaper. that would cover my stock upgrade.
what are the advantages / disadvantages between these types of rifling. i know, icould call them but its 5:00 they are probably closed for the weekend.

Most old rifle barrels have round groove rifiling, but square grooves are definitely not unheard of, so both are "historically correct".

Round ones look better.

They say that round grooves are easier to clean, but I can't tell any difference.

I don't think you'll find any appreciable practical difference between the two, assuming both are good quality rifling of good depth.

thanks, stophel. that's kinda what i figured. i probably wouldn't know the difference. except for the $60.00 savings.

I suspect the "unpolished" condition means the outside surfaces are similar to the Green Mountain, and other companies barrels.

They will require some drawfiling to remove the remaining cutter marks but, if a little work like this is worth $60 then go for it. :)

if it means draw filing you got good point. this is my first build except for a CVA squirrel rifle about 30 years ago. it was a good shooter but it sure was ugly when i got done with it. thanks for the advice, thats why i came to this forum.

I just got a premium swamped JP Beck profile barrel from Rice; it is a thing of beauty! As far as I can tell, it doesn't need any work on the outside and the inside is smooth as glass too. Yeah, I paid extra for it, but this may well be my last rifle (that's what I told my wife). At least for a while....

I ended up going with a Rice round bottom barrel...it was about $50 more than the same square bottom...but I put a lot of thought and scientifc analysis in my decision:

I called Rice to buy a 38" x .58cal swamped D-weight barrel, he said he was out of stock on that barrel, but had a couple made up in round bottom.

I said: "I'll take one".

Makes sense to me. :hmm: Roundball shoots round ball in round bottom rifling....
Perfectly logical...

Oatsayo all,
Any of you ever install a swamped barrel into a stock originally made for a straight barrel?
How much slop would there be and can it be filled properly?

Wouldn't even think of it. Way too much work to end up with something that is going to look like crapola........ :shake:
