I was browsing thru here a while back and I saw pics of this beautiful gun, it was stained a grey color instead of the brown. The poster said that it now belonged to a soldier. I can't seem to locate the post again and I was wondering who posted it and/or if anyone could tell me what kind of stain was used.

I believe you may be referring to post #488671. Not sure how to post the link, but definitly a beutiful rifle

Here it is:

Hi, Lady Coleman. The stain I used was Cabot, "Onyx." The owner wanted a grey finish rather than the usual colors. Since grey comes in a lot of different shades, I wasn't sure just how I would accomplish the desired effect. I put the stain on, let it soak in a bit, the took it back using 0000 steel wool. I have to admit I was skeptical about the outcome at first. Knowing the furniture would be German silver, it would be a very striking gun, indeed, if I could get it to turn out how it appeared in my mind's eye.

The owner, an officer stationed at Bragg, is very happy with it, so I guess it I was able to pull it off. The pictures really don't do it justice. You can see more at: www.gobblerknoblongrifles.com. Rick

Thanks fellas!
I am at Fort Bragg too, any chance you could get me intouch with him so me and my husband can see if he would let us come check it out sometime?

Don't doubt the skill that went into the guns manufacture, but to my untutored eye, its one ugly gun!!!

Perhaps your untutored eye appreciates the beauty of walnut instead...

To each their own, I think the grey finish is quite striking. Who says we have to be all stuffy and only use only brown or reddish/brown stain? Guns, especially flintlocks IMO are works of art and free expression and experimentation are what keeps art flowing from one generation to the next.

I am no PC nazi, but for me, some things look right and some don't.

That said, I fully understand that if you are making aa gun for a customer, you give em what they ask for, within reason.

But there are limits. Some years ago, Larry Hagman from "Dallas" fame approached the famous London gunmakers, Purdeys, and tried to order a shotgun with images of the cast of Dallas engraved on it. Purdey's allegedly declined as they thought such a gun too tasteless to cArry the purdey name. (Hagman susequently got Holland and Holland to make the gun).

I guess I see the black gun in much the same way. Just looks out of place.

Very pretty piece of walnut, however.

I believe that grey stain is quite popular with the in-line crowd. But hey, the man is paying you to give him what he wanted. His money, his choice.

I would imagine that if you sell cars and someone wants it painted pink, you paint it pink and cash his check. Seemed like a nicely built rifle. probably shoots and carries well. Heck, send it to me and I'll shoot it for a few years and tell you what I think of the finish then. PC? Maybe not. Nice rifle...yep.

I wouldn't want a "grey" stock myself, but it is a beautiful rifle nonetheless. The photos show (on my cpu anyway) is as a rather greyish color with brown hues coming through, an interesting effect. It will be interesting to see how it looks as it ages. The only thing that looks out of place on the rifle to me is the orange peel used to hold the flint

I like the color of it too. On my PC I see reds, brown and grey in the photo. Very subtle but none the less it ain't all black and white.

I bet back in the day they used what they had for stain. Better than using nothing.

I really like the color of the Walnut. What stain did you use for it? I am getting ready to start my first build and I have been reading through posts looking for ideas. My son is a graphic artist so he will be designing some scrollwork for me...simple patterns for me but it will make it "my" rifle.
