TC Renegade bad breech plug: fixable? Advice requested.

you dont have to find a breech plug just file the snail off/flat with the barrel and install a touch hole liner works fantastic with a replacement rock lock

You obviously haven't seen a T/C breech plug in percussion,

Replace the plug, it is ruined, sorry.

You will need a real barrel vice with metal V-blocks and a real wrench that fits the plug. If you can not find a plug at track or others get on waiting lists.

The Renegade likes a 1 inch barrel not a 15/16/ perhaps fleabay is worth a look /Ed

this was the first one i came across, but it appears that Track of the Wolf has the breechplugs to all manner of T/C rifles ...

i have used their preech plugs when i converted a '54 sewer pipe percussion to a .62 smooth flint

p.s. as regards the trigger, i replaced mine with the R.E Davis 'deerslayer" -something of an extravagance, but they are really nice triggers ... complete drop in...

@MSW Good call on TotW. Unfortunately the Renegade is a 1" barrel in 11/16-20 and they don't list a 1" in 11/16-20 TC percussion breech plug. I'll still call them though.

My trigger group seems to be fine, but I'll keep the Davis parts in mind. Thanks!

No luck with Track, they don't make or stock one for the 1" Renegade. Still have some other calls out.

I did a little reading last night and my concern with buying a breech plug is that it may require some level of machine work to fit correctly. I'm not set up to do that in the slightest, which means getting a gunsmith involved. Cost of the new breech plug + gunsmith time + back and forth shipping (highly doubtful I'm going to find a competent/experienced blackpowder gunsmith around here) will undoubtedly exceed the cost of another barrel.
I might try welding this up and filing it flat, maybe throw the nipple in my little baby lathe and try to clean it up, and limp it along, or try that TotW MRHH-S nipple that @SDSmlf posted earlier (thank you, by the way) and see if it fits. It'll be ugly, but the ugly will be hidden under the bolster.

Looks like user Grez55 has a .54 TC barrel up in the classifieds, just not sure if it'll fit a Renegade. Not a fan of the scope rings and kinda wish it was a .50, but beggars probably can't be choosers at this point :/

That can easily be tig welded up neatly to be used until a suitable replacement can be found. The pressure there is not that great because unless your **** spring is some super heavy duty after market option it is leaking pressure anyway upon ignition. That definitely the low hole in your bucket to begin fixing though.

If I had access to a larger mill, I'd peck the whole mess out with a larger end mill (whatever is large enough to completely remove the wonky 5/16 threads) all the way through the bolster, weld a slug in there from the top and bottom, cross drill it from the "clean out" hole and re drill and tap for a standard 1/4-28 nipple. Do it right and you might never be able to tell it was repaired.

With the right tools & skills its fixable, I'm just not sure I know enough people who take beer in trade for this level of work

yes i know .point was that even though they did not show them [ 15/16] in stock at the time, they had one. they do list the 1 inch renegade/ hawken plugs as out of stock. but its worth a call.

sorry ... looking again they only showed the 1 inch cap plugs in 3/4 x 16 tpi. part # was tc-16-3

A small machine shop or gunsmith with a TIG welder could fix that up in no time including shrinking the fuzzed up nipple hole and rethreading it to 1/4-28 original. I would check around and ask questions to find someone. I know someone who could do it near me but I'm on the east coast and shipping these days is likely to be more costly than the repair.

11/16-20 is a an odd thread size, if you were inclined to put a 3/4 thread in your breech plug selection would widen too.

I recently purchased a used Thompson Center Renegade Percussion .50 from one of the online auction sites.

I've been watching this thread for a couple days,
There "was" a foundry that cast rpl T/C plugs with the actual factory threads. They supplied ALL of the middle market suppliers.
They don't make them any more, and haven't for at least 10yrs. ALL of the suppliers list the past stocked item as "out of stock" and have for at least 10yrs.

You've received a lot of feed back here @Drain_Bamage,, but what's key, as you have said is cost vr; investment for function.
You said your have machine experience,, but don't have the tools,, I get that part.
I humbly ask,, how deep ya into it? How far do ya want to invest?
I get the part about trading with friends for a mig/tig job,,
Do you have the tools at hand to tap the nipple for reliable over-size threads? Is spending $50 plus shipping for a tap and over-size nipples worth it?

How far ya wanna go for the fix?
