Yes, as I recall the later lock had much better geometry in the cock. The flint struck at a decent angle and produced plenty of sparks. When they were in production, you could send back your old lock telling them that it just didn't work well and they would replace it with the updated one. I believe Roundball did that with his and can provide more info if needed.

I'd be surprised if that is an option since they aren't making those rifles anymore but you can get some replacement locks that will work fine with them. I think L&R makes one for it. All their locks are around $130 if I recall correctly.
