I am thinking of making my own wads.
I shoot a 50 cal.,should I use the 1/2 in. wads that are for 50 cals.or should I go with a wad for a 54 cal.?
I will be shooting PRBs with the wad in the barrel before the PRB.
I tried them for my 50 cal. pistol and they really seem to make a difference.
Thanks

I use .50cal WonderWads in both my .50cal general purpose hunting piece and my .50cal chunkgun in competition with excellence results in both. I think that you will find a WonderWad in .50cal will give you what you are looking for.

I've used Oxyoke wonderwads for years...personally I decided to use the next larger caliber size for a really snug fit & seal...a little more lube in the bore, etc.

When I pick them up off the range I can see tiny marks around the edge (almost like tiny teeth on a gear) showing where the pressure has squeezed the extra material out into the grooves.

Have I run scientific tests to prove the next size makes a difference...no...I just personally believe that it must.

PS: Be careful of the material you select if making your wads...ie: weather stripping at hardware store is a synthetic...can leave melted residue in the rifling

I picked up a set of punches from the local hardware store, and use them to cut out 1/2" wads for my .50 and 9/16" for my .54. They seem to work as good as the Wonder wads I used to buy.

I put 'em in a glass jar with my favorite lube and nuke 'em for a few seconds. :winking:

durofelt.com sells felt for punching wads out of, the do tighten my groups up in my .50.

What density of felt do you use soft, medium, or hard? Do you buy the 1/8" thickness?

Thanks!

Well,I got everything I need.
I'll be trying them out soon,I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the help.

Well, I tried it out tonight,it worked like a charm!!!
I got the felt weather stripping and the copper pipe.
I sharpened the outside and inside of the pipe with my Dremel tool,I epoxyed a bit to the other end of the pipe.
I lubed and froze a piece of felt.
After it had been in thr freezer awhile,I drilled a wad,it looks real good.
Now I will have to explain to my wife what the felt in the freezer is for!!
:rotf:

I use felt weather stripping cut general 1'' squares/ soak in murphys oil soap for a few days/ week or so then let it air out for another few days...

Trim a few rounds to fit specific barrel the night before going out, "75/69/62/50 cal.. etc..
I have way more then I can use up for awhile..
