So are a bear's teeth and claws weapons or eating and digging/scratching, etc., implements?

Never been bear hunting but I was once told that if you do go bear hunting go with someone you can out run, that way you don't have to out run the bear, just out run the other guy!

My dear wife calls all my guns MUSKETS, even my .22 lever and my 7mm wsm bolt is a musket at my house :shocked2:

Funny, yes, and mine does almost the same thing. She actually refers to them as "musket loaders".

I was trained in what are called "environmental weapons". And these objects really are "weapons" when used against others. Now, we're talking rings, watches, chairs, plastic combs, ear buds, you name it. As a cop,I carried a "weapon" and not just a revolver; there was no question about the potential use of it. My BP burners are "hunting toys", in my eyes.

When young I got into martial arts at age 15, at age 16 I got a girlfriend and a car.....my instructor (I cant spell sunsay) then advised I simply concentrate on "wall techniques" so I know what ya mean (a bic pen is a deadly weapon) :shocked2:

As a retired correctional officer you learn a lot about WEAPONS of opportunity. At any given moment in a environment of intense boredom interjected with seconds of pure chaos and terror you best understand the art of survival, and the ability to utilize the environment in which you find yourself to include what's available for your defense. Besides the issued pepper spray and a pair of hand cuffs. BEEN THERE

Never had that conversation face to face with Mr. Bear  but I would gesture it depends on what he is up to at the moment.

Another thing I learned is that protecting oneself is more a matter of "WILL" rather than "SKILL".

getting a lil :eek:ff

Yes, The fist thing we learned was that just because a guys a 3rd degree blk-belt doesn't mean he wont get hurt....just not as bad :surrender:

As for the Orig post..... I guess you can hunt with a rifle or a weapon and for self defense you can shoot with a weapon or a rifle. I don't see much difference. Need to maintain BOTH as if your life depends on it :idunno:

IMO, it's not exactly a hunting topic but it is about the way hunters think of their firearms.

Thanks.
I kinda rankle when all firearms are categorized as "weapons". Yes, they can be. But, as others have pointed out, almost any object can be used as a weapon, either defensively or offensively.
"environmental" weapons can be anything. A fiction adventure book I am currently reading had the hero defended himself and others with a silver serving tray against swordsmen. For us, it might be a branch against tomahawk or knife.
