I'm with @Phil Coffins , I don't "wax" any gun wood at all, I feed it. My guns are used,, they ain't never meant to be shiny. But wood is wood and needs care through the seasons.
I guess what ever trips yer trigger,,(?)

I pulled out a can of Trewax and began polishing some of my gun stocks. My wife came in and asked, "What's that smell?!" Paste wax can go bad. Rancid. Throwing away the Trewax (it is probably 20 years old) and getting new. Google says you may need to have a shelf life less than a year for paste wax.

So buy what you need.

I have a bit of a newbie question on this. The stocks on my guns appear to be varnished, and the barrels of course blued. Would waxing them make any difference at all? I always thought that waxing stacks meant that the wax was absorbed by the wood. But surely this can't happen if it is varnished?
