Pulled the barrel on my .54 cal rifle..
The has gun been used for hunting and been drug around several camps over the last 12 years..
I had removed the barrel 10 years ago, just too take a peek and see if any rusting was going on and too seal the inner channel if it wasn’t done when it was built..

After 2 years, I could see no signs of rusting & applied a coat of liquid wax and reassembled.

10 years later, I felt the need to look again, plus I needed too repair the nose cap.
It wasn’t pinned , only bedded and over time using alcohol during my cleaning routine it had slipped forward..

I removed the cap completely, cleaned everything up and rebed the cap back into the original position then drilled and pinned it in place.. using a copper utility tack as a pin..👍

With a few more character marks of course…

Yesterday's weatherman got it right. Today was a cracker, after all the rain we have been getting - wonderful! I ventured to the range to test a few cast projectiles in the PH 53 three bander. I usually shoot minies, as is the 'proper' thing to do in such an arm, but as I was fortunate enough to get hold of a Lyman .562 ball mould, I thought I would give the rifle a change in diet - not historical, I know, but what's the harm in a little experimenting. Results for a ten-shot group posted below. I used a 'fine' sight at the lowest setting aiming at 9 oclock - this rifle, in original form, has a tendency to shoot a little to the right.

Oh, I have cast some .570 ball too, but after this nice short session, I was content to wait another day for the trial of the ever so slightly larger balls.

Tomorrow, I'm hoping to head up to the block to do a day's scouting. I've been told it's still very wet underfoot, so I'll leave the rifle at home and settle on taking the canon! (camera ;)😂)

Kind regards, Pete

I didn't do much; while sighing in my Haines rifle I found I had a bent front sight; in the process of straightening it I wore some of the browning off the sight. I sanded the sight and started putting coats of LMF one it to bring it back to a nice rusty brown to match the barrel.

Took my T/C Patriot .45 out on the back porch, put some soda cans out at thirty yards and launched some .490 round balls down range, mostly using Pyrodex P. Probably fired between thirty and fifty rounds. Stopped when I started having noticeable hang-fires. This afternoon I suppose I will be over the sink cleaning the pistol. After that much shooting with no cleaning in between rounds, it ought to be plenty dirty.

Mmmmm.... lots of sulfur smell in the air!

Have concluded that I really need to hit the range more often with pistols (heavy sigh). Unless.... no, could it be? Pyrodex doesn't provide much in the way of accuracy? Yeah, that must be it! ;)

I was back home for a long weekend, been back at my camp a couple of days. While home a bought about 10’ of old hemp rope to cut and fray for fire starter and wadding. Bought a big hunk of beeswax too. Been working on the SMR, I wasn’t pleased with the polish job I did on the frizzen so I took it off and tried a little harder, fairly happy with it now. Also fitting and sanding the butt plate, tang, & breech.

Got the 3 target stands of 1.5" PVC put together, added some pea gravel that was left over from some plant project of the spousal unit into the base to keep it anchored in a wind, and hung the N-SSA sized targets on the crossbar. Will try to get some pix in bit but may have to wait until the AM. Next is to put the grommets in one edge of the 2 packing blankets for privacy/noise abatement and hang from the ceiling joists while practicing an N-SSA match. Figure that practicing a match twice a day with the iron sighted Ruger air rifle, then it should improve the skills by the end of the match season in November. Have not forgotten making the bullet trap out of the 84 gallon overpack drum for live fire. Has to be acknowledged that an air rifle is a lot cheaper for practice vs. a full sized ML .58" musket.

But, the pyrotechnics is worth it. :p
