Another wonderful morning at the Townsville Range with my Parker Hale 1853; a real autumn day with low humidity at last! So, I can now provide an update for my 'paper patched, that's not what you are meant to do with minies' experiment. I was able to get the full detail of Lee 470 trashcans off, but unfortunately my leave pass ran out before I could shoot the string of Lyman 315gn wadcutters; I'll round that group off next outing. Man, those wadcutters make clean holes don't they? I was really pleased with the outcome. Loading was good, cleaning between shots, with the paper patches falling off the minies about two metres to the front of the muzzle. Mind, all shots were taken sitting at the bench with the musket resting on a front sandbag firm and secure. Fun, what?

Kindest regards, Pete

Just while I'm cleaning, I have bothered to take an image of a data mark below the barrel of my Parker Hale 53. I see it is stamped 4, with an A, B, and a 5 within a triangulated circle. The serial number consists of four digits beginning with 16. Would anyone in the know be able to establish the date of manufacture, given these few details? The musket is in superb condition throughout, without modifications of any kind.

Thanks, Pete

Got my Shotgun Turkey tag and gathered up my gear for first time out with Black Powder shotgun. Gonna be a chilly morning.
Good luck! These are from my game camera. I have no good excuse for not going after them.

well i used some 777 ffg i found hiding in the garage. fed it to one of the Investarms .54 carbine's that was sitting by the back door. looked hungry.
90g under patched ball it looked like a shotgun pattern. switched to some conical. 2 inch group at 50 yards. that 777 don't produce much smoke do it?
wife showed up and took me by the ear and shoved a vacuum cleaner into my grubbies. floors on two levels is done and i ain't going to the third!
guess i better clean that carbine before i run out of gumption.
or maybe try it out in a TC Hawken with a longer barrel.
still a couple hours of light.
