Today I made lead. A while back my buddy gave me a large industrial lead weight. Must have weighed over 80 lbs. It was much too big and heavy for my lead pot, trying to melt it down with a gas torch proved unsuccessful. Today I carrying it....slowly, into the back yard, grunting and groaning at each step. I cut in half with a chainsaw and saved all the shavings. The shavings and one half of the weight went into a cast iron pot on top of my "made in India charcoal forge". Soon I was able to start filling the ingot mold. When the pot got low the second half of the weight went in.

I should have enough lead now to make round balls for the foreseeable future.

Chainsaw?? Holy Hell… if I was your neighbor I’d lend you a bandsaw or even a crappy chisel! No charge.

I’d say you should.

as usual I have been shooting about 10 shots a day with the trapper. I need new glasses . my prescription is about 5 or six years old... having a hard time focusing. have a lazy eye that drifts and I see double... still make some good shots but not like last winter. I really don't enjoy bulls eye shooting. I much prefer Biathlon but in the summer it’s the only game in town. I found out at sectionals that apparently I need a pistol stand. They got all bent about me having a holstered pistol. Got to keep everyone happy so yesterday I made a pistol stand out of some undressed native butternut that I had kicking around. Today I hit it with linseed oil and tested it. works just fine. View attachment 227447

Finished up the possibles pouch.
It took a total of about 5 hours to saddle stitch. (Rifle to show scale)

The hardest part was turning it right side out!

The horn will be its new buddy when I find time to work on it. I have a powder horn I made back in the eighties that still works fine, but it’s bigger than most. I’ve had this little horn for about the same length of time. I think it’ll look good with some scrimshaw.

Did some more experimenting on the practice stock. Did one of the beaver tails and started carving the tang crest. Dug a couple of craters trying to cut against the grain. Very tedious, especially as I’m making it up as I go along. Thank goodness it’s a practice stock. Wish I had 10 of them!

That looks really nice TDM. You’re doing great!

Today was threatening rain for quit a bit if it, and it finally did rain some. I figured the grass cuttin’ could wait a while since the grass had been getting a little crispy and hadn’t any rain on it for a couple weeks. It’ll for shore need it next week.

So this afternoon when it started raining I jumped on making a bullet bag and the powder horn. I wasn’t going for anything fancy. Just want things functional. I also wanted a horn that’s not near as big as my other one.

Shaped up the cap from a piece of maple, made the spout plug and shaped the spout end to hold a strap. Still need to polish it up some.

I didn’t have any suitable brads yet to hold the cap in place, so sealing it with bees wax and pinning it will be for one day this upcoming week.
