I’m taking a break right now. After going outside several times I couldn’t stop sweating even back inside! I put the first coat of T & T on, left it hanging in the shop an hour or so, then wiped it down good. It’s hanging outside in full 99 degree sun now. Do you think that’s over doing it? I can move it into the shade if need be. In the process of draw filing the barrel now.
Probably be better off in the shade... It'll still darken some and you won't be risking it possibly cracking from the hotter temps in the sun.

@TDM did you do the carving? Looks good. That’s something I’ve never attempted but I’m curious on getting in the know.
No, can’t take any credit for it, that’s one of the new factory carved Kibler kits Jim just introduced. I got carried away after I’d had a couple of drinks and ordered one even though I already had one sitting on the bench in Maple, that’s the one I plan to do some carving on. No fool like an old fool.

Just send that stock to me. I'll be doing some scouting up around 10000 to 11500 feet . Sun up there should get a very good reaction. On second thought. Wait till the gun is complete and send it. I should have it nicely sun treated around January. 😀

I left my Woodsrunner and Colonial cherry stocks out in the full sun (85-95 degrees) flipping them every few hours for three days. I had no problem with cracking but leaving yours in indirect light will still suntan the cherry. One would definitely hate to see that beautiful stock check.

Me too! I moved it under the shop overhang so no direct sun but lots of indirect sun. It’s back inside now for the night but I’ll put it back out under the overhang after the 2nd coat tomorrow. Thanks.

Been wanting a solid and stable shooting bench, and also wanted it to be primitive in keeping with the spirit of our hobby. While processing firewood this thought came to me. It was a breeze to make. 470 pounds of Tamarac. Rock solid and perfectly stable. I think it would not look out of place on a 19th century homestead, of which my modest mountain log cabin property bears a resemblance. Additionaly, It also did not cost even one solitary dime for materials.View attachment 241596View attachment 241600View attachment 241603
Wow. Your place is beautiful, your 'rest' is very ingenious, and your guns are beauties. Thank you for posting. :ThankYou:

Back to the horn for five hours today- the creative bug is back 🙂

My Swiss Feltutzer I just got It’s actually 1853 They shoot these rifles across the body like standing up thus they need a hook butt to fit around your upper arm, strange lot. They are even on the martini 7,5/53 around 1885, I have two of them. Martini type Researching why do they have the nasty pommel on the but plate that digs into you. I just removed it, and brass one , great bolt as I did on the brass butt. Yrs but you are not supposed to shoot it like a normal rifle, well I do if it’s comfy. I’ll leave it as that Yes BUT WHATS IT FOR, this pummel

My sons in wales Harlech castle

Think this is the lady that put it in holts uk auction must send her a great full card and look it up on map
I wish you wel

Sanded the carved Woodsrunner stock, didn’t take much. Cleaned out all the incised lines with a toothbrush. Mixed bone black and 91% alcohol, used a small tip brush and went over all the incised lines, stopping every few inches and wiping off the excess with a paper towel and alcohol. This took a while. Using Laurel Mountain Cherry stain, I started with a very weak solution of stain and denatured alcohol. Trying different strengths on a test board, finally settled on one. Brushed on a couple of coats and it’s hanging to dry. It’s my first time working with Cherry so I didn’t my know what to expect. But after drying, if I don’t like the color or the black stands out too much I’ll rub it down with alcohol and start over if needed.
Very nice!

Possibly the nasty pommel is to set the butt of the gun on the ground without damaging the buttstock itself. Just my thought.
That a brill thought , Yes the butt plate would stay clean and so would the uniform , Yrs for standing up ,just tried it , and then the barrel is vertical and it stands nicely It’s got a hole in the pummel probably for screwing it in. It’s a big bolt probably for testing but on ground whilst on parade , think you got it right very well done, we might hear from an expert in Switzerland

Have not screwed pommel right in but as you see the rifle stands well on it, Yrs very well done.

July been expensive at holts a Swiss and an English rifle ,cannot do this too often, am 80 so not much time left , but once you are gone that’s it. Haha I wish you well

Still Colvid positive after 3 days

Taking another break. It’s 101 again today so the shop AC is struggling. Put the 2nd coat of T&T on this morning and hug in under the outside shop. Just brought it back inside to hang, figured it had been in the heat long enough. Finished draw filing the .50 barrel and put a good thumb polish on the muzzle starting with 220 down to 600 grit. Nice and smooth now.
