Mixed up a weak solution of Jax Black and distilled water, probably 25/75, and did both locks, bolts, screws, misc parts. Used 0000 wool to rub everything back to a fairly light patina. Got one lock back together. I’ll use the same solution on the barrels. Probably do the .54 this afternoon or in the morning.

I'm taking a shooting pouch making class at the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi Ohio at the end of the month. I forged this nice light knife to attach to the back of the bag. I just need to make the sheath it goes in. Blade is 5 1/2 inches and 10 inches over all. I like the contrast of the light and dark of the antler handle instead of a dark brown all over. It will make a great and handy small game knife.

Went ahead and blued/blacked the .50 barrel for the Cherry Woodsrunner. Used the same solution as earlier. Made 3 applications drawing it back each time with green scotchbrite. Has a nice dark grey finish now. I’ll put this one together tomorrow.

Looks very cool... Couldn't you make the shorter one with the one you already made and a bandsaw?

Waved the white flag and called Kibler, ordered a new patch box cover and a couple of extra brass plates. I took just a little too much wood off of one side and even with a new plate it wasn’t going to look right. Have plenty of other things to work on.
It happens. At least you are honest about it unlike that moroon who had the 'build log' recently that got deleted, you know who I'm referring to. I will soon have my own confession/how to fix my screw up thread myself here!

Disassembled the iron parts off the pig-in-a-poke Hawken (1950/60 ERA) I bought last spring and began detailing them. Lot of corrosion on the inside of the lock, trigger plate and various other parts. I wont have to be concerned about a nice brown patina on the giblets. Nature and time have taken care of that for me.

Went to the range today burned up some of my homemade Black powder out of 50 caliber CVA 100 grains of 3 fff love making my own powder dont have to worry about using it up homemade primers as well can shoot till the cows come home and not break the bank at $6.00 a pound but kicks like a mule

I refined my whatzit .30 cal a bit. the trigger was still in its as made configuration so i took it out and polished it, rounded the finger pad a touch, and polished the sear bar.
couldn't believe i drifted the pins out and back in without a snag. even got the contoured ends laying correctly.
thought i'd try some .311 rb but it is just too tight to swallow them. have to use the .300's with a .005 patch.
it shoots grand with them so i need to order some more from totw.
the scary part of today came when i forgot to take off my reading glasses. turns out there are sights on the barrel! I could actually see to refine my sight picture. never dawned on me to try that.
sucks sometime being old and dumb.

Denny, i also use homegrown. i find for just punching paper if i match the bore size with grains volume it almost eliminates recoil and is almost always the most accurate.
just a observation. I don't have the meat on my shoulders i did when i was a framer to handle the mule kicks.

Yup I agree usually for just punching paper I only put about 50gr. but I was sighting it in on 100 yards getting it ready for deer season 👍👍👍👍

It was time today: time to check the longarms. Took all of them down to the kitchen table since it was a heat index of 114 outside. Checked all with bore scope and most made it through the past 6 months very well. We keep house at 75 and never let the outside in. Used WD40, then bore brush. Then a dry patch to clean and finished with a wet patch of WD40. Store then muzzle up except the pennsylvania and enfield which are on the wall. The blunderbuss had the worse rust.
First time using WD40. Also checked nipple and vent holes.
Next up are the single shots, then revolvers. FUN, FUN, FUN

Looks a little rough but a good try anyway. I have been making my own molds for a while out of aluminum but I use the cherry method and I made a vise to close to center.
