after the 5th or 6th time pooching the nose pour on my whatzit, i said some words that the management doesn't allow and cut the offending mess off the forearm. tempted to start over with a new stock, but this one is purty.
maybe tomorrow after i get out of the corner for my bad language, i will hunt up a piece of wood and splice the forearm and forget about pouring on this one.
took a break and shuffled about in the woods looking for a grouse. nary a one. made it a whole 1/2 mile from the house.
sat on a fir stump and made friends with a chipmunk. seems he followed me home. he or his clone is sitting in my fig tree eating the biggest fig. his days may be numbered.

Fired up the lead pot and cast roughly 75 .45 and 75 .50 LEE REAL bullets to try out tomorrow, then to empty lead pot I cast about 25 .69 balls for my little cannon.
Muzzle loader deer season starts this saturday so Wife and I are on a time crunch to get decent loads zeroed, been few years since I deer hunted with muzzle loader and rules changed, the way I read regulations a round ball is no longer legal, regulations say hard cast bullet :dunno: what I cast isnt what I'd call hard but it is touch harder then pure lead, hopefully we can get decent load found tomorrow for the LEE bullets.

had been on the range with the Le Page

Ok friends of Black Powder,
It started about a month ago when I cleared out and closed my rental storage unit that I had for about 10 years at least! While clearing it, I found a "NOS" CVA Mountain Rifle barrel in .58cal 1" across the flats with 1:66 twist that I had purchased back in 2010! WOW! I had totally forgotten about it!!! I just unboxed it today, inspected it, wiped it down and oiled it up good inside n out! So after this find, I guess I will be looking for a good CVA Mtn Rifle stock(1" barrel channel) to fit this new barrel either online or on this forum guys! I would love to find enough original CVA parts to make a complete build if possible... I had a factory build CVA Mtn Rifle once and sold it back in 2016 to my regret! Anyway....here are several pics taken today after unboxing my forgotten barrel...Lol! Certainly a GOOD surprise to me...a CVA "BIG BORE Mtn Rifle" barrel assembly rediscovered! Any CVA Mtn Rifle 1" stocks for sale info would be GREATLY appreciated!!! THANKS from NC!

I'm particularly interested in the results with the 45. Our regs call for a minimum 170 gr projectile for big game (except for elk and moose which is 210 gr). Would be nice to have a way to put the 45 in service for deer.

I'm mystified by the required hard cast bullet.

It's all "animal rights" politics probably....

Always wanted an antler tipped ramrod. So I'm making an antler tipped ramrod.

Super Glued, an instance where using the word Super is acceptable, the antler to the 3/8" DIY store oak dowel rod.

Then pinned it with an .094 hardened pin. Then added some sawdust to the epoxy to hide the fact that it's clear epoxy.

Will start shaping it in a few days.

Decided to add a 3rd coat of stain to the Cherry SMR. I started by mixing a little stain and Bone Black to highlight the wear spots. Of course I lost most of the bone black but it darkened some areas. Then after about 5 hours I went over the stock lightly with 0000 steel wool and hand rubbed the 1st coat of Tried & True on. I’ll let it sit for an hour or so then wipe it down. In between I finished sanding & polishing the lock externals and honing & polishing the tumbler and sear. Blued the externals with Jax Black and drew it back. After a WD-40 and oil treatment it’s all back together and silky smooth. I’m heading home tomorrow so it will all sit till next week.

Nice cool day so I spent it getting some targets ready for our Simon Girty Long Rifle “Turkey” shoot in November. This year’s theme will be hunting of all sorts of native game. This is one of three full size deer targets. The steel plate is positioned in the optimum kill zone.

I tested it for durability with my 16 gauge Fowler with .648 balls propelled with 62 grns of FFFg powder at 25 yards. It held up fine. Now I’ll get other two deer next week. Have to mow 4 acres tomorrow.

AWESOME flintlock "internals" and lockplate polishing job! Are you going to leave the lock "external" shiny, browned or blued! It looks great as is!!! 👌

Shooting SMR with higher loads to discover how it's hitting at 100 yds. Also shooting Pieta Rem 1858 with homemade powder cartridges to test different materials and methods. Also brought SMR to show guys at indoor range; they wanted to see it; they thought it was pretty cool.
