I put together a really nice Kibler SMR with the standard rear sight placement but the rear was just a blur to my 74 year old eyes. The rifle was much to nice looking to alter with another dovetail to move the rear sight forward so I sold it. I didn't want to put one of my clunky peeps on it either.

This the only fix that works for me to be able to see the sights clearly.

Interesting, a peep is easier because the eye auto centers and you really are only looking at the front. Did you make that peep?

Did you make it, or buy it?

today i sat and put transfer black on a butt plate 650 times! or so it seems. started with the toe of the plate 1 full inch from the butt. the heel of the comb 1/2 inch high. have it screwed in place tonight and started the toe plate. had on with a lollipop on the distal end but it got caught in the grinder as i was narrowing it. now its a peppermint twist!
cut a piece of strap 1/8 i had laying about doing nothing to earn its keep and turned it into a coffin shaped toe plate.
started tripping over my own feet so quit before i really ruined something important!
darn! i forgot to clean the .45 yesterday, guess i am not done.

Organized and re-wrote a seven page presentation about the origins of the American long rifle . The presentation will be given in a few days to a local historical society.

Worked on the SMR today. Tried browning the butt plate, but after 3 or 4 hours nothing happened. Decided to 'age' the metal instead. Looks decent after knocking it back a little with scotchbrite.

Also sanded the stock. Thought it looked good until I went to whisker it. More sanding tomorrow.

I made the peep, I adjusted it by heating and bending to put the top of front blade centered and leveled with the notch on the rear sight. The smaller aperture makes the rear sight fairly clear and the front sight perfectly clear.

Another thing; when I build a gun for myself I use a try stock to get the pull, drop and cast off measurements perfect for me. When I shoulder one of my guns the sights are in perfect alignment so I I made my peep be in alignment as well.

I tided my little side bicycle shed up a bit for my new 1955 engraver still full of junk I have a big workshop down bottom of garden 100 yards away with big machines. It’s full of junk now and theses days only make little things and guns but I even buy them now. What do you expect at 79’. Haha

Made some nitrated coffee filter paper cartridge envelopes. I had them outside and was letting the glue dry. I forgot about them and a norther blew in this morning. They blew away like a kite without a string but I did find a few of them a while ago.

Put my lock, and trigger assembly, back together. Did my final whiskering of the stock, and stained it with aqua fortis.

Came out redder than I thought it might, but it is what it is. I'll see what it really looks like when my finishing materials arrive.
