Somedays there are not enough sware words. I rarely shoot caplocks anymore, usually only a couple times per year. My cleaning process usually involves breaking a tooth pick in half and putting it in the nipple, so the barrel can be soaked for a few minutes before scrubbing. This time the tooth pick was leaking, so I used the hammer to push to tooth pick in a little farther in to the nipple except it broke off. Yes, stupid mistake...I know. Removed the nipple and tried to push it back out using a needle with no luck, then a tip cleaner for the Oxygen / Acetylene torch still no luck, finally got out the old pin drill. The tooth pick came out little drill chips at a time. Likely not worth the labor to mess with it, but I'm somewhat stubborn and extremely cheap...not willing to make the purchase, pay shipping and taxes since there are no local muzzleloader shops.

When the mood strikes me I work on the TC stock overhaul I started a while back, yesterday it was reshaping the butt ugly lock panel.

I started with a rat tail file;

And finished with a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a chainsaw file, of course I used gouges and a variety of files between the rat tail file and the sandpaper.

On to the even uglier side panel;

I’ve got a TVM Natchez PoorBoy back in November. Gun has been giving me fits, but today at the range felt like a productive day. Gun seems to be coming round, and groups are getting smaller…

Worked on carving practice today. I used a 3.5" round dowel to practice stabbing in the outline and relief carving a shell pattern. Didn't go to badly.

I picked up this rifle on auction a few years ago and posted about the awful gouges in the wood. The caplock rifle was likely built in the late 60's or early 70's due to the Harold Robbins lock that was used. I've decided to clean up the gouges and keep the wood work otherwise close to original and convert the rifle to flintlock.

With the lock and drum removed the 3/8 x 24 hole was drilled a little of center by the original builder. I'm hoping the lip on the flashole liner from Track of the Wolf works out properly, otherwise I will make my own without a lip. Once the liner is installed the lock will need inlet and lock panel reduced in size.

Started on the gouges with some rifler files and a nifty little blue sander that was acquired in an estate sale. Before and partial progress pictues;

I realized today, I have enough Muzzloaders.
Couple long rangers, Big bore shoulder bruisers,Stainless,Beautiful, less than good condition for banging around woods, Flintlocks-Handgun and Shotgun

At some point i decided “I don’t have any more excuses -to buy any more”

Well I watched Jeremiah Johnson on tv last night but hard as I looked I could not see what his rifle was. No flash In the pan. But it was flintlock times I guess.

I heard one film star complained his rifle was too heavy and they made one in plastic.
I had a Bridgeport J head mill and an Atlas 10X36 lathe, gas welding gear, presses, barreling bench, etc, etc, but had to downsize when we moved into the metroplex (9,000 pop.). I have miniature lathe and mill now, the machines themselves are a project as they have to be re-built before you can actually do something with them. I think your shop looks good!
I’ll. be 79 on Tuesday I am not a border , I just collect and dump things. So it’s been two days of the big dump , I won’t need all this stuff in this life or the next The foxes have chewed foam to bits a right mess but I can after 10 years see the floor Next job is carrying it 100 yards all to a skip On Perth OZ every few months you can dump all your junk out by the road. Pickets will reduce the pile as it’s all free. , a week later the council truck comes around to collect what remains for recycling. Magic

I got home from work to a earlier than I thought Package arrival.

Another day or two I’ll have the Gm Stainless Lrh .50 Barrel for it. Unfired and new in box.

This beauty has original receipt from 1984, all the paperwork and original box with it.

A Gem to say the least.

It was mentioned above that L&R made drop-in locks for TCs, my experience with one of these lock is that it is indeed a drop-in after you do about a weeks worth of moving the barrel back to correctly position the touch hole, repositioning the lock bolt hole, grinding off the back of the hooked breech to accommodate the new lock bolt position, re-inletting the entire lock and shimming up the gaps around the lockplate because it is undersized for the TC mortise.
