Drove up to Track of the Wolf this afternoon pick up a few things. A ram rod, brass fittings, patch knife, and couple other things.

Time to finish the stock, first the walnut sanding sealer, I tried putting it on with 220 grit sand paper to add walnut dust to the mix for better pore sealing. I did a couple of coats this way but found it to be a bit sloppy.

I switched to a fresh piece of scotch bright pad and found I got better coverage plus the pad acted like a sponge and held much more finish so I could cover more area. After I applied the sealer I wiped the excess off with an old washcloth, the finish dried almost instantly.

I sanded the sealer back between coats but not back to bare wood. With the scotch bright pad the stock was sealed completely in 4 coats. With all the sanding a little sapwood showed up near the tang, I chose to leave it and not try to stain it way for now.

Wonderful day at the range…clear blue skies, perfect shooting conditions.

My dad had his brand new .54 flintlock out today…first 3 shots at 25 yards. Not bad…

I’m getting ready to put a nice antique grey finish on my rebarreled Dixie Mountain Rifle. The gun is now a .54 calibre, with a 36” Corleraine barrel.

Problem is…well it’s been a number of years since I’ve had a .54

Takes a while for that much oxide to form, so tonight I remedy the situation.

It’s sunny and freezing west of London getting the bones of a percussion rifle together. I have some back action nice shotgun locks I’ll try and make a bigger back plate for my ml target rifle project
but although these Thomas bland locks are beautifully made the back plate is the wrong size and shape so I though I would use the old back plate to make a drill jig of course I have to find a tiny thread tap from 1880 whit or bsf I guess. So searching through old Harry’s taps and got one. Don’t throw my stuff out when I am dead , joan intends to put it all in a skip. I don’t care I’ll be dead Ha ha ha. Well my test plate seems to be ok bit of a challenge but I’ll go for it

Yes that was the difficult bit. Now it’s in bits Scary mainspring Just got to find a thread tap for sear spring even smaller not an easy Lock to take apart. Least I have started the challenge. Making another lock plate No worries. It’s just assembling it ha ha tiny thread taps. What great engineersxin 1880s

Time for the Tru-oil on the TC stock overhaul; I am applying it with a clean square of scotchbright pad and wiping off the excess like I did with sealer. This is my first time using the scotchbright for Tru-oil application, I am getting more of a satin finish this way opposed to the normal shiny Tru-oil finish as applied by other methods.

This is after three coats, I plan to put on 3 or 4 more light coats to see how it comes out.

That was a bit stressful. Worst bit getting sear spring in so strong. I drilled the pivot hole and hot glued the side plate where I wanted then drill and tapped holes. Took me 20 mins to assemble it So I saved a back action lock and made a plate I can cut to shape I used brass as I had it and the little screws would be happier in brass as the tap might not have been the perfect on Waiting for tube now later a percussion hammer eyc No safety sear 2 nd notch but it’s rebounding hammers , you cannot have everything.

Had a bad day. Now that some time has passed since my shoulder surgery, I can start building up strength to shoot next month, but only low recoil rifles. I did get permission to lift my six pound SMR to my shoulder and dry fire to start building up some strength. With the rifle to my shoulder, the sights looked strange. After several mountings to the shoulder, I noticed that the rear sight had moved way to the right. Even after a lot of pleading and insisting that there is no recoil from my 36 caliber rifle (25 grains of 3fg powder and a patched round ball), I can't get permission to verify sight position until much later. Well, it still felt good to put the little rifle to my shoulder.

Loaded up some Pritchett cartridges getting ready for the range tomorrow. I will be taking my Repro 1862 Richmond Carbine to get sighted in.
