What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Went out to my range and test fired my T/C Hawkins 50 cal. after I have coned the barrel. I can now load round balls now without a short starter. Works good, now I have two more rifles to cone the barrels on I expect them to work just as well.

set up a target to shoot a TC Hawken .45 flint lock.
walked back to the bench and the wind came up and blew down the target.
walked back out and set up the target again. braced it with a couple big rocks and chunks of fire wood.
walked back to the bench. wind really blew and knocked the target down again.
legs getting tired by now.
set the target up again and actually got off a shot. 1/2 inch from point of aim. this was the first shot with this rifle. 50g fffg under a frontiers lubed .015 patch and a RB. made me smile.
loaded another and the wind blew the target down again. this didn't make me smile!
next shot went 1/2 inch low and to the right of the first. Smile.
wind blew down the target again. at 22 degrees i said that's enough! or something to that effect.
tomorrow i am building a steel target frame.
really liking this .45. it's the only and first .45 i have had.
spent the rest of the afternoon knapping flints.

Finally got the Pedersoli 20 gauge SxS I got from @Prairie Dawg out to the patterning plate today and what a pleasure.
60 grains of 3f Swiss, two op cards, a lubed cushion wad, one ounce of #8 shot, and an os card to hold it all in.
Both barrels showed nice patterns with appropriate spreads at 25 yards, no donuts. Happy camper!
The unmentionable guys got a kick out of a charcoal burner at the range too.

Well it was a choice clean the leaves in the yard or relax cleaning my 4 muzzle loaders. Wasn't a hard decision. Decided then to shoot off my Thompson .45 Hawken. Downloaded the video to slower speed. Shot at a target about 40 yards out an easy spot on shot, love it! Hope the video comes out here.

Made some lube/rust preventative for my muzzleloaders. Olive oil and wax. No more petroleum products on my muzzleloaders.

Inventoried cache of black powder & substitutes not in flasks/horns. 19 pounds left plus 150 pellets. Can't recall the last time I bought powder - sometime around 2004. Unopened Hogdon cans are marked $2.79 for FFg, $3.00 for FFFFg. Dupont Fg was $2.25. Elephant had no price, neither did Clear Shot. Two pounds of "blasting powder" (quite crude) still in a glass jar from the 1960's was hiding in the back.

Thanks to this forum, my ML interest is renewed, even tho' my buds are all dead and there are no "shoots" within 100 miles.

While the old powder in sealed cans still makes smoke, old caps have proved more "disappointing than devastating". Flints were a better investment.

Wow!! $2.79 - $3 bucks a pound !!!! Stuff was a better investment than gold!! Back in '04 it was around $400 an ounce. Today its close to $1,900 and ounce!!!

Well me and my three buddies mucked 59 40 ton loads of 5 % lead ore here at our mine in southern Missouri.I am 62 and they are between 20 and 30 years old.They each told me happy veterans day and thanks for your service.That was nice to here from them.P.S the lead will be on its way to the market.Also admired a couple dragoon revolvers I have.

10-4. So far I like it. I cleaned two of my favorite muzzleloaders, completely removing all petroleum based oil. The new lube goes on easy and stays where you put it. I’m gonna try to get out tomorrow and shoot them without cleaning the bores first. Shouldn’t have to. That’s one reason I wanted to switch. The terrible fouling from petroleum oils was another. I also think this type of lube is more historically correct.

The FLMLC range is a purpose-built ML-only range located NW of Fort Lupton, CO, only 200 yards from the trading fort built by Lancaster Lupton in 1837. Right beside the South Platte River, and once in a while in the Spring, in it.

A reproduction of the original fort has been built very close to the site of the original post. Some changes were required to meet modern life safety standards.
