What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

After posting this morning I went out and tried my luck at a few more gray squirrels. Shot 7 times and have 6 squirrels in the fridge marinating. Would have never happened had I not installed a peep sight and a different front sight on my Crockett squirrel rifle.

After cleaning my Crockett Rifle and the squirrels, I cut about 7 million cleaning patches from old, white Tee shirts.

Next up is my .54 GPR with a reduced load.

I did some trading with a local forum member for a Pedersoli long range vernier sight.

I just finished fitting it to the .54 Sharps. It got tight on the low end of the adjustment, but a little bit of file work fixed that. Looks great, I can't wait to shoot it. I'm wondering if the factory front sight will still work, or if I will need to requisition a taller or shorter one.

Finished making the poles for my new wedge tent.

Put patches, lube, balls, and cleaning patches in a dresser that the wife cleared out so I could organize (and be able to find) some of my gun stuff. Also drilled a ramrod tip to accept a nail then cut the nail down and peened it into place on the ramrod on my .54 H&A Underhammer barrel assembly.
I also cleared out an area of the garage from my gardening stuff so I could set up to mold balls tomorrow.
Little things, but over time, they add up and help.

Have you used the stock ladder sight and if so, at what range it it effective? I've got a month to wait for my range to open it's 1-400 yard range. It's hard to get much more open space than that here in Florida. I'm hoping the ladder sight will handle that....along with my eyes!

That’s a shame. I don’t think the blades are made to same level they were years ago. My Craftsman bandsaw is so old and decrepit I really don’t use it anymore. But a good bandsaw is handy.

Ok here’s the low down on the loaders for my 58 Hawken. Used some plastic water pipe I had laying around. Just cut into a length I thought would be enough for a patched round ball 90 or so grains of powder and a stopper. Cut the wine corks down with my dremel to get a snug but not tight fit. I use a .018 patch so the ball and the patch friction fit well but not tight. The ID of the tube is ,60. When ready to to load, pull the cork, dump the powder and chase it down with the patched ball, cap it and done. Works great. Keep a few in my bag. Makes for a fairly quick reload.

If using a powder measure, you can stack patched balls one on top another and use it as a loading block. I made a few like that a while back. You can feel when the ball exits the tube and is at the muzzle, so there is not a risk of double balling.

I haven't shot this rifle yet. I will try the ladder sights first and report back.

I don’t really worry about it, but you can never have too much. IMO.

Ordered a .60 Lee ball mold today. Now I just need some lead. I ground a touchhole pick thinner so it fits the touchhole and spent the rest of the day wishing I was shooting.

I cut out a NW trade gun pattern out of a plank of walnut , made my center lines and chiseled out the barrel channel in the rough .... Ready to start barrel channel but no barrel for it yet ....also yesterday I cut out a Fusil de Chasse pattern out of a plank of walnut and today chiseled out the barrel channel , rough , too and Also been grinding flats on the barrel for it ... Kept me busy !

You better show off when you finish I would love to see it

Oh dear me what a lovely tidy workshop. So envious I have a little workshop in side bicycle shed , I prefer it to my big one a 100 yards down garden. So much stuff in it ,everything is constantly falling down , but it does a lot of good work. I took over the side shed one very cold winter and fiddle in ever since ? Nice and cosy . Ha ha the big shed has big lathes and mills etc in it but I manage well for small things I spill into the summer room to in my favourite chair, wife given up on me. Love from west of London
