I cut some patching strips, lubed em and put em in medicine bottles to store. I also made a quick n dirty loading block out of a scrap piece of Poplar laying on the floor of the Man Shed. It turned out alright I guess. Could have been better if I had a Forstner bit (which I do now after a trip to town with the wife this evening). It will work for now until I find a small piece of maple to make another one.

No need for a Forster to make your loading blocks with…. Cut your block with about 3/4-1” extra on each end, drill a starter hole about the size of a screw so you don’t split it, then screw it tight to a piece of scrap wood before you drill your holes. That’ll keep the hole edges clean on the exit side.

No they come out in the winter once in a while to stretch there legs and then back to bed .Sometimes it’s a change in the weather like a chinook well wake em up .
try explaining that to our local biologist. many of our back country roads are gated. open from april 15 to November 15. can't have the poor griz forced off the roads we paid for.
i have seen many prints in the snow but this is a poor time for him to be shopping for groceries.

Not exactly today, but an ongoing project to upgrade the furniture in my rifle from brass to pewter. This replacement buttplate was cast in a plaster of Paris mold. I think I could do it better with a Petrobond casting or even a greensand casting, so I may redo it if it doesn't clean up nice. The fore end cap is a bugger, though. I have cast it several times, but the core for the casting has to be a split core, and it's really difficult.

At this point in life I’m glad I don’t have them in my neck of the woods. Too much to deal with.

Great image, @ArmorerRoy! That quart pot looks like it's done some yards. You make me want to make a few of those tooth breakers for my next field excursion. I wonder if you could push a little dusting of ground salt onto those biscuits before you oven bake them.

Sometimes, I like to do a dry camp, no refrigeration or cool box. The makings I take consists of jerky and biltong, an assortment of dried and fresh fruit, sweet and savoury biscuits, dry hard cheese, plain chocolate, nuts, and the essential coffee and sugar. A bloke won't starve on this lot, and a return to simplicity does wonders.

Cheers, Pete

Started the New Year off by shooting the trusty Hawken. The gun shoots so much better than I. Only two other young guys at the range today shooting very high dollar small caliber target unmentionables. Now it usually takes a hit on the head with a hammer to make me realize I'm being offended. But I'm not sure about this. They started in on me about being a contributor to global warming, my gun being worse for the environment than a diesel truck. Not sure if they were kidding or not so I decided not to kill them. Happy New Year!
If that happens again tell them that if that’s the case they should be walking or riding a bicycle to the range. And by all means, never fire up an outside grill or gas stove. 😁
