What should I buy next???

Just sold a .32 cal Traditions to further aid my affair with a TC Custom Renegade percussion. I already have a.54 and a GM drop-in .32 cal barrel. Have been leaning towards a .40 but want to shoot either 1.roundballs or 2.conicals exclusively. Should I consider a .45?? This barrel would be for small game and deer in my state.
.38 cal is minimum for deer here in Ohio. Please help with my dilema. :hmm:

I really like the .45 cal. I have three different rifles in that caliber. I recently build a rifle from kit.

Considering it only costs $250. and take about three days of easy finishing it was worth it.
In case your wondering what it is, its an underhammer from Deer Creek.

I started with a .50 cal and have a .45 on order. It is a 1:66" twist. The .50 cal. puts balls in a tight group at 75 yards.

While a .40cal would be better for small game, the .45cal would be a little better for deer, take your pick. There aren't many conicals out there for the .40cal, but it's generally used as a roundball gun for target shooting anyway. There are some conicals for the .45cal, but it's nearly as good as a .40cal with a roundball too, so again not too much difference UNLESS you want to shoot conicals.

I must agree, the Underhammers from Deer Creek make nice guns. It's available as a .45 in 1:66 twist and either a 26" or 32" barrel. I prefer the longer barrel, but you might like the balance of the 26" gun a little better. The guns are fully assembled as "unfinished kits". You could stoke it up and fire it as is, or do some sanding and polishing and do a little staining and browning or blueing of the metal. The barrels are cut rifled, which leaves the bore a little "jagged looking". It may need "broken in" with 100 or 150 shots through to lap the bore smooth.

They are just plain neat guns, and they finish quite well at the target range too. I've got that same silly .38cal limit in WV for deer also. I don't know how they settled on that size in today's market. But I read that a lot of the "hillbillies" kept using their muzzleloaders on up and through WWII and many were in .38 caliber. Them "danged" smokeless guns was too expensive and didn't shoot near as good as ol' Betsy, I guess...

I'm not aware that anybody was making a .45cal drop-in for any TC muzzleloader...have you discovered that GM now makes a .45cal drop-in barrel for the Renegade?

I saw Green Mountain .45 caliber 1" octagon barrels for T/C at Track of the Wolf for $159.95
I think they have 15/16 also. They have LOTS of barrels listed.

I'm pretty sure they can make 'em fit a flintlock too -for a small additional charge, of course. You better check with Track tho. I have been wrong once or twice before.

No, you're 100%[url] correct...in[/url] fact, I've bought two barrels from GM that they offered in percussion but had them put flint plugs on them....62 smoothbore and .58cal rifled barrels...I didn't happen to go through TOW, I use Cain's Outdoor in West VA, but same result

I am very sorry about my rambling about the Underhammer. :yakyak:

I misinterpreted the gist of the post. I NOW UNDERSTAND that you were wanting to know about a barrel swap system for your Renegade. There are lots of GM combinations and there should be one in 1" (across flats) that works in .40 or .45 caliber from them. I got mine (but was 15/16" AF for a Cabela's Hawken) from Track of the Wolf. They seem to keep a good many of these "drop-in" barrels in stock. TOTW's price was the best I could find anywhere (and believe me I'm CHEAP when it comes to finding good prices...) :rotf: :haha:

NOTE: I did have to take a little bit off of the rear end edge of the under rib to make the new "drop-in" barrel fit to my stock--wasn't a big deal, just take a file or a dremel and shorten it by appropriate amount.)

I will also tell you that I settled on the .40 caliber. WHY? Because it was the closest size that was legal in WV for deer, AND I never had a .40 caliber before, despite all my years of shooting these charcoal burners. I am really pleased with the GM barrel. It's smooth as a baby's bu.. well, you know what I mean--slicker than a cat's a.., Dang it! There just ain't any of those corny expressions that aren't bordering on the rude side of proper conversation. :redface: They are nice barrels though, and I think mine will shoot better than I can see. 50yds is just a cloverleaf. 100yds isn't much bigger either.
