Naw ,no vacation , thats a good one ...just workin around the homestead, preparing for winter and such , always busy on somethin :) Yep , back on a N.W. trade gun ....thank goodness :)

Clean up the rounded area at breech with gouge ... Find and mark your center line for barrel and mark at breech , at tang spot ... everything about this build is dictated by this barrel center line ....

Follow yer centerline with undersized gouge . Watch yer depth so ya dont gontio deep , stay straight as possible , the back half not near as finicky but half forward ....stay straight ! Some rough guide lines drawn help sometimes ...doesnt have to be pretty just gettin out a bunch of the dead wood right now . At breech , center is marked , then mark width of barrel ...stay in these lines for now , use straight chisel , straight down at breech and get it roughed in . Ive got it all about as far as I can for now ....I can't center barrel and make my first set of guide lines as per usual ...I have to finish grinding / filing flats on barrel first then come back to this ....

Cool!

Can you please tell us what some of the architecture or differences are that makes it a 'Barnett' style?
There's not a lot of differences between the different makers , and that is exactly what HBCo wanted , no differences , that way one style was not more prevalent than another to the customers . They had a rather ridged pattern but it had ....not loop holes but just wasnt terribly specific and these tiny details are what the differences are . The biggest one about say , a Barnett and a Whately . The Barnett barrel flats were longer than a Whately ,6-7" usually and the buttplate was elliptical , like a tear drop ....Whatelys had a buttplate with parallel sides , and their flats were short , some as short as 4" !! The early Barnett dragons / serpent tails were identical to Wilson tails ...why ?/Barnett apprenticed under Wilson ...then later Barnett s dragon side plates were tear drop shaped .... See ? Nothing major , just small details ....Oh yeah , esp. for this build....Barnett combs were more rounded , Whately combs were like an 90 angle , rather abrupt ...the customer wants a nice rounded comb so ...Barnett it is ! :)

Tryin to get the breech set down ....in between the two humps at the breech .... Its close but not quite ... I marked some out side barrel lines, these are rough stay inside of them , and I knocked the corners off the temp. channel to get barrel to set down in there a bit more .... mark where the Oct. section ends ...

At Oct. section , staying just inside lines , chisel down . Gotta start that 90 degree down for the flats ....just a little down .then get that little sliver out of there..easy does it .... Redo lines each time at Oct. section , gets lower each time ... Barrel is .264 high at breech ... Be starting inlet black soon ....
