    Patches after shooting

It's my opinion that Pyrodex burns hotter than real BP. My patches would burn in the center until I started placing an Ox Yoke pre-lubed wad under the patch. Now they look like the ones in the picture, except the edges are more frazzled. I use yellow T/C lube in the tube. I get good accuracy...

peep sights for a t/c hawken?

I've made several tang mounted peep sights and found them to be great at the shooting range. In the dark woods, especially in the evening, it was too hard to see thru them. I made several different aperture discs with small to large holes and tried 'em all. For hunting I reinstalled the...

    T/C Hawken breech plug?

I cringed when I read that advice in The American Rifleman a couple of months ago. The writers there and their 'experts' don't know squat about real muzzle loaders. I tried to remove the plug from my old T/C Hawken years ago with no success and I have the original T/C action wrench. Thought I...

    1:48

One of the fun aspects of shooting muzzle loaders are all the combinations of loads that you can experiment with. Try round balls and the different bullets available and see what you and your rifle prefer. I shoot round balls in my 1:48 rifle for fun with a felt wad under the patch to avoid...

What a load! Sorry, couldn't resist.

    Breach plug for TC hawkin

T/C sold them years ago (1976) as a set with the tang for $12.00. They came in two threads sizes and were different for percussion and flintlock.

    Second stupidest thing...

A T/C Tough Rod makes a Whoosh Whoosh Whoosh noise, has a 75 yard range and isn't very accurate.

    .50 cal pattern

I went back and reviewed this thread. I don't see where you mentioned the twist rate of your CVA barrel but my old out of date CVA catalog lists a 1 in 48" for their St. Louis Hawken kit gun. If so, that may be part of your problem. My 48" twist T/C Hawken's groups dirverge someting awful with...

    Breech plug removal

    If it's a T/C rifle don't remove it!

    Casting Conicals

I drilled the bottom pour hole on my Production pot out to 1/8" - I think that was the size - the bigger hole helped a lot casting .50 Maxiballs.

    Your Knife

Lots of people have dropped by my knife table at the market where I sell to show me their Ruana knives. Most warn me before they'll show it to me that I should not expect much. I've yet to see one that's not crude and UGLY! But for some bizarre reason they do bring good prices.

    Pyrodex

Muzzle loading is only one of my many shooting fun areas of interest. If it's going to take ordering online to get powder I'll confine my rifle to the closet and shoot my other guns that are not a pain in the ass to get ammo for: 22lr, 357 mag rifles and pistols, airguns, etc. I started out in...

    Brass and the hunting gun

I keep the brass on my rifle polished bright. I don't know if it's cost me deer, but it bothers me and seems out of place in the hunting field. I'm toying with the idea of making a tight fitting cloth sleeve to cover the stock on my rifle, leaving only the area around the lock, rear sight and...

    Field dressing a deer

Ditto what "eat moose meat" said with a couple of variations; I lay the deer on it's back with the head uphill. I'm VERY careful to not cut any body cavity sacks - like the stomach. I cut out and discard any blood shot meat and any body innards remains that were opened up by the bullet/ball -...

    Home brewed lube.

My problem with T/C yellow tube lube is just the opposite - it's too runny in hot weather. In cold weather I carry the tube in my jacket pocket to keep it pliable. I was hoping Moose Snot would solve that problem. I'm going to make up some Moose Snot with beeswax, castor oil and MOS. I'll make...

Need help on BP accesssories New to BP

Here's what has worked for me for 30 years with my .50 caliber Hawken: Pyrodex RS Brass Zouave powder flask Powder measure with swivel funnel on top #11 Remington "hot" percussion caps In-line capper Nipple wrench T/C #13 cleaner T/C lube in the yellow tube for PRB and Maxi's Wood short starter...

    Enfield accuracy issue

: Tire weights, commonly called wheel weights, or WW are even higher in antimony content - around 7% to 8% and of course, too hard. A Google search of WW makers revealed around 3% antimony content. It's still probably too hard for BPML bullets. I'm going to cast some RB and Maxi's out of WW...

Can't get the darn thing clean!!

I made a scraper for my T/C Hawken's breech face. Used machinist's layout dye to get it fitted very close. I never get anything off of the breech face. For some reason the hemisphereical shaped breech face in my rifle never seems to accumulate fouling.

    Accuracy at 100 yds.

What do your patches look like after they are shot? I would not expect your slow twist barrel to give good results with bullets, but only good results with properly patched balls. In your .45 caliber rifle would start at 50 grains of FFFg BP or Pyrodex P and work up to 70 grains. If your patches...

    Range rods

Everyone around here uses a standard three piece shotgun cleaning rod. I machine a brass bullet pusher for the rods to avoid deforming bullet noses and also captures the brass bore guide I machine for them.
