    Oil Hardener

Make sure you carefully dry the cloths or brushes you use with cobalt and japan driers. They can self combust.

    My look so far

I'm curious about the trousers. And this is just a question, I don't really know anything about the period your working on. So, would the trousers of that day be what they call bird tail, maybe swallow tail, (i think) at the waist, where the buttons for suspenders would be attached, instead of...

How to make a powder horn?

I bought the Sibleys book based on a recomendation from here. It's a great book, I would have liked a bit more detail in the scrimshaw section though. However, my horn is coming along, slowly.

    Doing what I like best.

Ok, my Son tells me he has a friend at work that shoots squirls for food, and he's tried some squirrel stew and liked it. So, I made him a promise I'd give some of their stew a try next time they make up a batch. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Scottish all-metal pistol

The ones I've seen are called Murdoch of Doune pistols. I doubt the regular troops of the 42nd (Black watch) could afford to carry them, officers would have though. As for pipes and kilts.....ummmmm....(not to go to far off topic) that's me without the bonnet my band mate (as he's known here...

    scrimshaw work

Thanks guts for the reply. Eagleeye, that's some fine work there. I realize now one of the problems is my horn isn't smooth enough. Fortunately it's thick enough to rework where I've messed up. I will defiantly post a pic or two when I'm done. Unless I'm too embarrassed by it.

    scrimshaw work

Ok, I have my horn all ready to scrimshaw, and I started in on it. What a mess of it I made. So I ended up taking a file to the horn and cleaned all of the cuts off. So my question is. My "scrimshaw" looked like a bunch of jagged cuts than some of the nice smooth lines that I've seen on horns. I...
