    New Rifle.....

Interesting question, Idaho. I have also always heard that pure lead was the way to go. I have even have read of Sir Samuel Baker doing tests and discovering that the added weight of lead brought as much penetration as it cost one when compared to casting with a percentage of "quicksilver" (as...

    New Rifle.....

Finally! My new fiance's engagement gift to me is finished! Jim Gefroh sent me the photos of my new 8-bore a couple of days ago. While there are certainly aspects of the rifle that aren't PC (especially the sights), I can almost smell elephant dung just looking at these images. :D...

Muzzle Mitts / Finger Cots low price

I have to wonder if the "natural lamb" condoms would be more PC for muzzleloading purposes. :rotf: Best, Buffler Runner

planning on building a 4bore any thought or tips

Just for the sake of clarity...Samuel White Baker's "Baby" was a 4-bore but he shot half pound exploding conicals of his own design...thus the common misconception that it was a "2-bore". Still, Baker notes that he fired "Baby" VERY rarely on game but it NEVER failed him. Best, Buffler Runner

ordered a 4bore barrel today need lock source

I think you should be able to get an action from Blue Grouse.... www.underhammers.com As for recoil, I did some calculations online (another site I can't seem to find again) for my soon to be delivered Gefroh 8 bore Jaeger and lets just say it (and your 4 bore) promises to be "exhilirating". :)...

    Casting Round Balls

WV Hillbilly is correct in his above post relating to why you do not want the bullets too hard either. In fact, unless my memory fails me (and it sometimes does), the "magic mixture" found by the early African Explorers was actually softer than WW (though not by all that much). In short, there...

    Jeremiah Johnson Movie (Robert Redford)

If I'm not mistaken, it's not really the recoil that knocks Bob over but the fact that his horse bucks at the sound of the shot, no? Best, John

Shopping spree. What do I REAALLLY need? ;)

All, I just found a guy here in Egypt who can make anything I want out of ebony. I was thinking about some shooting accesories for the front stuffer I am having built. The guy is really reasonable in his prices and I am looking for some suggestions as to what I REALLY can't live without. I...

    Volume of Drams? Any help?

All, Thanks so much for the help guys. The rifle is going to be an 8-bore from Jim Gefroh in Colorado and should be done by January. I was thinking about having some guys here make some neat accesories for it out of ebony...powder measurer, turnscrews, tinder box etc. It is my impression...

    Volume of Drams? Any help?

Thanks Bill. I knew I couldn't trust that online conversion! So, if my math is correct, ten drams would be 273.437 grains and fill 18.601 cc's or 1.13 cubic inches? So, a 19mm drill bit would bore out this volume of material at a depth of 6.56 cm or about 2.58 inches? Thanks, I really...

    Volume of Drams? Any help?

OK....I am stuck here in Egypt until August and have little access to black powder or a factory measurer. I am having a rifle made in the US and am thinking about having some craftsmen here make me a powder measurer (among other things) and need some help. Can anyone out there tell me the...

Also curious if someone can tell me the relative frequency of Iron vs. Brass Furniture on a Jaeger. Thanks, Buffler Runner

Does Everybody Shoot Muzzleloaders On The 4th?

Not true except in a vacuum. Here are some links to "random falling bullet" and "penny dropping" data. :D http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a950414b.html http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_225.html Best, Buffler Runner

    Why don

This is, of course, true only in a highly peculiar realm of absolutely starving N.A. buffalo, prehistorically large elk, and lions that have somehow been too close to nuclear power plants! :D The sight of a 2000 pound Kudu, a 2200 pound elk, or 1000 pound lion as described above gets my trigger...

    4 Gauge Muzzleloader

All I know about the gun you mention is that I would like to own it. :D I can tell you that there is something obviously incongruous about a weapon having a commercial purpose while being profusely engraved or carved. I would think a "market gun" would be rather utilitarian in its appearance...

Thoughts on Flintlocks for Cape buffalo

It seems to me that, at the ranges cape buffalo are usually shot (30-80 yards), NO rifle is going to actually put them down with enough regularity that you can feel 100% safe. I mean, by that standard (and short of a CNS shot), none of the great safari cartridges are "stoppers" either. It is...

Thoughts on Flintlocks for Cape buffalo

Keep in mind that even professionals do not usually hunt with their "stopping rifles" if they can afford it AND another more pleasant weapon to shoot. Baker, for instance, in one of his writings notes that he employed "Baby" VERY rarely and only under the most frightful circumstances. He...
