    The Gift

RwBeV,I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's failing health. As one who has lost two hunting buddies as well as other long-time friends, I know how much it hurts when they're no longer around. I think he wanted you to have the rifle so you'd think of him and maybe say a prayer and savor a...

Real nice work, sc45-70! Thanks for sharing.

    Snaphaunce Fowler.

I don't know squat about Snaphaunces but it's wonderful to see a young man interested in these old- style arms. Please keep us posted as you progress and keep up the good work.

    Here it is!

I like the craftsmanship on your rifle. I'm in no position to critique your work because I'm building my first rifle, which will be a Bucks. Someone, I think it was the late Turner Kirkland, said that a longrifle builder needs to make six rifles before he really gets consistent quality and knows...

    Gunbuilding Books

I'd highly recommend Recreating the American Longrifle by Buchele, Schumway and Alexander. It's a wonderful, thoroughly useful reference book you could use forever. I bought my copy online at Amazon but I've also seen them on eBay.

    Refinishing a TC Hawken

It looks like you're off to a good start. I, too, would choose tung oil over Tru-Oil. I've seen sap from trees and weeds dissolve a Tru-Oil finish. And tung oil is much more durable. Actually I'd prefer satin urethane over either of those two finishes.

    Barrels are SCARCE!!!

I'm building a Bucks County longrifle using a Long Hammock barrel. I was very impressed with the smooth finish of the bore, the expertly-crowned muzzle, and even the exterior finish. The barrel had no measurable runout, which also impressed me for a barrel of that price. It did need an oversize...

    Sitting Fox "Mich-I-gun" Kit Gun

Others will disagree, but I think the .45 round ball is too light, as least for Iowa deer. A buddy has killed four deer with one shot apiece. The trouble is, by the time he got to the end of the blood trail, each deer had already been tagged and field-dressed by other hunters. A .50 is a better...

'Bout done with cherry Tennessee - pics.

Congratulations on a well-built rifle, Meteor Man! What kind of wood finish did you use? Just curious.

Round ball results from new jug choked tulle

That looks like potent whitetail medicine. I'll be you can hardly wait to hunt with it!

If you could have only one rifle Caliber?

Where no game larger than deer is hunted, I'd go along with Ron T. and choose the .50 caliber. Smaller calibers are too light for big Midwestern deer, in my opinion.

My new Leonard Day Wheellock PIX

I really like your wheellock, as well as the utility of being able to substitute a flintlock mechanism when you want to. Thanks for the pix. I'd like to see how it groups.

    Harrow disc blade

when I worked for a gun manufacturer, I cut .45 slides with a bandsaw with no problems. I just used a slow feed and ran coolant. As I recall, the slides were around 52 Rockwell hardness. Hope this information is helpful.

That's an impressive-looking Bowie, James! Good job!

    My Powder Horn

That's a very fine powder horn. I only hope my first turns out half that well. Congratulations!

    laminated stocks

A careful man could laminate plain cherry together and it would be hard to discern from solid cherry, I should think. But oak, maple, or figured cherry would be a different story.

I'd get a copy of Recreating the American Longrifle by Buchele, Shumway and Alexander. You can't go wrong with this book.

Are old house window weights good?

If you want a source for soft lead for casting balls, make friends with some local roofers. They often throw away lead flashing or will sell it cheaply. I still have a couple hundred pounds of lead remaining from a supply which I acquired for free when I worked as a roofer twenty years ago.
