new gun - working up loads - advice?

Have a new GPH .50 flint. Followed Lyman's suggestion of soaking the barrel with Hoppes solvent for 24 hours then swabbing the heck out of it. Followed it up with a few flushes of HOT water, then TC 1,000+ lube. Started shooting - just to learn the gun. 75g Goex fffg, TC pre lubed patches...

    PRB question

as was posted 3/6/2005 by bbassi - "I have owned and hunted with a Cabela's Hawkins style percussion gun now for about 15 years and have really enjoyed it" hey man, this is a flintlock page.... :nono: What, you get that new gun? :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: :blah: Maybe we should have...

PRB's and a fast twist barrel

Thanks. I agree with "shoot it and find out" But being new to this, I wouldn't know good from bad. for the record, GPHunter is 1:32 twist. Only time, powder, and lead will really tell the tale. Just seeking wisdom. BobW

PRB's and a fast twist barrel

I had purchased a Lyman GPHunter (fast twist) because of wanting to shoot conicals. The forum has shown me the light and PRB's are now my preference. I thought I had read that PRB's in a fast twist barrel may be problematic. Anyone have any experiences? :: BobW

    Primer???

following a lot of advice found on this site, the following are my personal answers your questions: 1. I use a TC pan primer 2. no need to so far (watch the "goo" in the humid summer) 3. fffg as pan and charge 4. Outside edge, 1 - 1.5 pushes :results: two different guns, TC Firestorm and...

    Cleaning a Patent Breach

No, it is a flinter, as has been discussed in other threads, Lyman and T/C have them. Due to som very typical upstate New York humidity, the "goo" seems to get quite heavy in there. When i remove the vent liner, it is uncanny the crud that is still there after a good hot water flush and also...

    To shoot or hang it?

Agree with BLAHMAN (and everyone else). What is a gun made for? To be shot. If it was supposed to be a wall hanger, there wouldn't be a barrel on it. It is an insult to the maker to not let his masterpiece perform. BobW

    Cleaning a Patent Breach

After searching enough posts, I now know what one is, and also know that my GPH .50 has one. My question is: What are people doing to clean in that area since the .50 jag won't make it in there. I had thought of buying an undersized fouling scraper (.32?) but don't know if it will fit into...

Okay, so where can I get them (RMC replacement liners)? BobW

    GPR .54 Flinter

Old Charlie: Did the RMC liner require tapping or was it a direct replacement? I'm new to flint shooting & have a GPHunter as well as a TC Firestorm. Vent hole is HUGE on the TC and because of that I believe the ignition is really reliable. I would like a similar one for the GPH. Zonie...

    I MADE FIRE!!! - I didn't expect this...

Thanks everyone. :thanks: I could reply to each and every on of you that yes, it was about as humid as it could possibly be. You were dead on for that one! :RO: Actually, it was rain/drizzle the whole day. :curse: So I guess that except for the late season - minus 20 days here in New York...

    I MADE FIRE!!! - I didn't expect this...

Okay, I finally got a chance to put all that I have been reading here to the test. I took my flinter out for the first time and actually made it go off!!!! TOO MUCH FUN!!!! I'm hooked! Okay, here is the question: Is the absolutely greasy mess that resulted in the pan, on the frizzen, and...

    Attention NY Muzzleloaders

Interestingly enough, I'm hearing that the bow hunters also aren't interested in the earlier or longer season that is being proposed ::. I am an avid bow hunter who has also taken advantage of the northern zone early ml season. Can't understand all the hostility..... :hmm: The only "crisis" I...
