    Wrought Iron Rifle Barrels

The Rockbridge Bloomery is an online source for information on building and using your own bloomery. It can be a simple operation of one or two people(the more the better). Their bloomeries average about 20-40 lb blooms per session. They're labor intensive but if you want the real deal you can...

    mold cherries

If you can find the book "Art of the Blacksmith" by Alex Bealer,There is a section on gunsmithing with an explanation of how cherries were made. Billy

    Cutting a blank

You may want to try a japanese saw. They have a cross cut and a rip side. They cut on the pull so they can use thinner steel than a standard saw. Less mass to blade, less friction. A little oil on the blade to lube it may help. If you are ripping with a cross cut your making more work for...

    drillbit question

I think I may have caused some damage to hole. Think I'll order a 5/16 vent liner from totw with the appropriate bit.

    drillbit question

I'm trying to drill the touch hole on my first build. I've trashed two bits already. Am I using the wrong kind of bit or is my drill press turning too fast? The pilot went in without a hitch, but the 13/64 turned cherry red and stopped. What am I doing wrong? Billy

    Loaded Flea Market Shotgun

Sounds like an episode from "sanford and son". The one with the Brown Bess. I've seen that story line on other tv shows. Never heard of it really happening. It wouldn't have been a comedy if you pulled the trigger and accidentally shot someone with it. Billy

How do ya make good Charcloth?

Not to hijack this thread but I remember reading some people would use a knotted up candle wick in place of char cloth. The wick was wrapped up on itself hangman loop style and the end charred. Any thoughts on that? Billy

    Trigger Guards

Thanx for that short treatise on cast parts. I'm presently filing casting marks on German silver parts for a Lancaster. It sure is a lot of work. How thin is thin enough? Billy

Just curious, What type of flux did you use. I'm open to new(?) ideas. Cheap works too.

    Help, what`s it called.

I've found all my spokeshaves and drawknives at flea markets. As well as rabbet planes and untold numbers of chisels and gouges. For new stuff try Constantines or Garret-Wade, they can get a bit pricey. Hint: If the person at the flea market knows what a tool is called they probably know what...

    Heavy barrel

The barrel is 1" across the flats. Even a taper would be good. But I'd rather not ruin a good barrel. If it's not wise to alter without great expense I'll learn to live with it. Thanx for the responses. Billy

    Heavy barrel

Recently aquired a 44" .50 cal barrel. Picking it up it seemed more like a barbell. It's a straight octagon barrel. Is it prudent to drawfile to a swamped profile, or just deal with it and hope there's a stout branch when I draw a bead on a deer. Was thinking I could make a Lancaster style out...

    lock inletting

Have you checked to see if your mainspring isn't touching the barrel? I had a similar problem on my build and used some lipstick on the spring. I took a little bit off with a wetstone.

    My new (?) tomahawk head

Nice lookin axe head for a failure. As for business ethics, honest men are harder to find these days than mlr's. From what I can tell Hell's gonna be crowded anyways. My advice, heat it up and bang some more. Billy

Thanx, just sometimes I get a little anal about the little things. As a good friend once said, "we jump over logs, but we trip over match sticks". Thanx again, Billy
