    powder horn woes

The hole is in between 1/4 and 3/8". The hang up seems to be about 1/3 of the way up the horn, which is about 12" overall. It definitely trickles.

    .54 hunting loads

My new Early Virginia has a 42" barrel and is a .54. I'm about to sight it in with the goal of a 100 yd zero with whatever I decide for a hunting load. I was thinking 90 grns., but would be very interested to hear what people who have been at it for years use.

    powder horn woes

I just got to shoot my new TVM Early Virginia a couple of days ago, and also attempted to use my new powder horn. However, the horn is impossible to work with, as it will pour out a few grains and stop, after which I shake it, and a few more come out, so I stuck with my old powder flask. Is...

    New Early Virginia by TVM

Yes, the lock is on the correct side. I'm not a true lefty though; I'm right-handed, but shoot left handed and am left eye dominant. I just realized I have some interesting stats on my nine gun collection--two are flintlocks, three have octagonal barrels, and four are specifically left handed.

No, sir; I'm not overseas. I'm at the Naval Academy, and we typically get about a month of leave due to summer training, and mine's not till July-August. However, you're more than welcome in advance for when I do go overseas. Thank you for your support.

    new (well secondhand) flinter

Norfolk, I'm sure you've been asked this in the forum before, but I haven't come across you yet. I know the situation for shooters in the UK is different (if not non-existent) but what are the laws for black powder? I'm just curious; I can't imagine living under UK gun laws. Thanks, Caleb.

    New Early Virginia by TVM

7 months later, the EV arrived at the house. Bear in mind that with these pictures, you've seen as much of it as I have. I still have to wait til July to actually see it. Anyway, the specs are .54cal 42" swamped barrel, L&R Queen Anne lock, Premium+ maple, and all mounted on brass...

    Black powder question

First of all, I think the primary advantage of black powder is the satisfaction of knowing you're in the same boat as your forefathers. An advantage of BP over a substitute is that it is more sensitive to ignition, and in flintlocks, this is critical, as the powder in the pan needs to catch a...

    The Patriot

In October of 2002, I saw this movie for the first time, at the ripe old age of 13. A few weeks later, my dad asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I, having already done research on period firearms due to the curiosity the movie aroused, answered "a Kentucky Rifle." I ended up with a...

    Sight-in/ Break in

Thanks for the tips, everyone. One more question (for now). When drifting sights, is it necessary to have a vise, or is having someone else hold it sufficient?

    Sight-in/ Break in

This particular barrel will be a Green Mountain .54 1-in-72 twist. And your bringing up loads reminds me, I am planning on using hunting loads of 80-gr. Other than raising/lowering point of impact, does varying the loads affect accuracy, namely, the group size? And Rat Trapper, I like your...

    Sight-in/ Break in

Also, I intend for this rifle to be a deerslayer, so I want the sights to be set for hunting loads with a center of mass sight picture. I shoot high power/service rifle a lot and use a six o'clock hold, but this is for targets whose exact size and distance are known, and as this will not be...

    Sight-in/ Break in

Well, it's been a while since I've posted last, as I've been awaiting my TVM Early Virginia with bated breath. My EV is being built now, and should be ready in 3 or 4 weeks (though I won't get at it until mid/late July). Anyway, I understand the basic principles of sighting-in primitive...

New TVM Virginia - Finishing the Rear Sight

Are there any particular types of files or tools that are especially suited for this? How are files classified? I must admit I know little about them...

    How many Fs?

I have a 29" 1:48 twist .50 caliber hawken. I will be getting a 42" .54 with a 1:70 twist. My inclination would be to think that 2F might be better for the longer barrel. I guess I'll have some experimenting to do in 6 months. As far as priming, FFFFg has always treated me very well, and I...

    How many Fs?

I have always shot FF in the main charge, with FFFF in the priming pan. In reading around, I have found that many people use FFF in both. Is there any noticeable difference in performance/accuracy? Are they better for different things? Thanks.

I'm out of Dixie, but it is still in me.

It's amazing I know. I load my M1 as if I were right-handed, and then simply change hands.

I'm out of Dixie, but it is still in me.

Hello all, My name is Caleb McGraw, and I have been a flintlock blackpowder shooter for eight years now. I have a Cabela's left-handed (for some reason I have this disease, even though otherwise right-handed) .50 cal Hawken rifle with a 1:48 twist. I have never hunted with it, nor have I...
