    Ball/patch confusion.

"without using a mallet " This may be your answer also. having to bang on that ball can cause a deformity on the nose that would show up as bad groups.

Who shoots a fullstock Hawken flinter??

I've a fullstock 54, L&R lock 1 1/8wide barrel, great stock I bought used on guntrader or somewhere. Great shooter, but be very aware, these beasts are BIG and somewhat heavy, for me anyways. try and get one in your hands before buying or bulding!

    Replacement GPR ramrod?

Try the tradional web retailers, but the best thing is to roll your own. You can add any type of tips you want, iron or brass and pick your wood/material. start at rack of the wolf I think the diameter is 3/8.

    Dry Fire

This may seem over simple but a little contact cement and a small piece of leather on the hammer seems like it might work. the contact cement is easily removed with a small alcohol pad. This would ease the mind on the hammer hitting the frames and would be cushioned by the small piece of leather.

Results from a new 1862 pocket police

Nice so far. Is that 5 1/2" barrel? As for the chambers did you ID the culprits Yet? When you do see how they are differant from the others. They might seat harder or easier, or if you see any leading they may be a little off center. Maybe a little polish might help them. Anyways the...

Pure lead! (or is it?) a field test ?

this might be oversimple. I do all the thumbnail scraping etc for softness of lead but wouldn't a closer test be to cast a batch of known diameter balls slugs etc. these weigh a certain amount if cast from pure lead. weigh a good sample to see what they actually weigh and compare that number...

Pedersoli AN IX: Killing My Flint (*PICTURES*)

Just a small contribution. I bought a pedersoli kentucky flint pistol kit last summer from dixie. The lock had springs from hell. The frizzen spring was thick wide and took greater than 15+ lbs to open. Luckily the truck suspension spring, er mainspring, was also as thick and wide. I feared...

    better accuracy

I'm not sure of the actual numbers or how it applies but this was an explanation given me when I raised powder charges in smokeless and the poi lowered instead of raised . The explanation was the time the bullet was in the barrel was less so the recoil of the rifle was felt less which resulted...

    GPR 2nd time

I agree with the suggestions so far, the rmc vent liner stopped one out 25 misfires. Also have a look inside the barrel where the vent hole gets screwed in. Sometimes a burr can block the flash charge from going in and igniting the load. That's something no vent liner can fix.

    Your Favorite (poll)

Favourite flint, Lyman GPR 50 cal, taken apart redone wood and metal, might as well have been a kit, target load 50gr 3f 490 lee ball walyworld ticking ballistol 6:1 lube cleaned with dish soap and water, using wd40 for oiling for now favourite shooting at the range here in southern chester...

    tresco nipples

Ian, the gain in accuracy is from a theoretical standpoint. more reliable and possibly faster ignition means the ball is downrange a fraction faster giving less time to pull the shot. As to replacing the nipples, do it now and save the original as a spare. It may take a heap of time before...

    Horizontal stringing

A few other things to check, is the tang and all associated screws tight? Also do the wedge pins go in with thumb pressure only or do they have to be pounded in? Are you lining up the sprue tdc? Look at the muzzle end, make sure there issn't a burr in the rifling, inspect all around the crown...

    GPR Lock Problem

I don't mean to sound offensive, did you compress the frizzen spring before you tried to remove that screw? If not the tension of the spring and the slimness of the screw is a bad recipe for exactly what you describe. I just replaced my frizzen today with a heat treated one I had done months...

    Uberti 1st Dragoon - defective

It might take a couple days but rest assured Dixie is first rate. I bought a kentucky pistol flint kit that had the lock from hell, decided I didn't want to mess with it asked for an exchange all done in a week!

    Cleaning

there is one from muzzleloader building supplies that screws into the vent liner hole. I have a 1/4 x 28 rmc that comes out with a hex wrench This thing is excellant no leak could probably be built from something at Home Depot.

    Which manufacturer ?

Another possibility is it could be a kit gun. I had a Lyman 1860 kit back in the 70's and I polished and filed every marking that wasn't a serial number. If it's well finished and appears factory then you're back to square one.

    Barrel Length

Gunbug, I have a TOW fullstock Hawken 39"bbl 1" thick 54. It is a bit hvy @12.5 lbs. but once you settle it in and fire it shoots exceptionally well. It liked @55gr 3f hated 2f and does not like ball with a big sprue. I had a wild hair one day and stepped the charge up to 90 gr 3f and the...

Is it a good Colt Navy replica ??

certainly used and will need a little tuning if you get it. The locking cutouts look as if the bolt needs a little deburring, also the screws have been buggered up a bit. The chip in the grip is another area that I'd be alittle bothered about. These are small issues to correct but should...

    Sights on a 53 Enfield

If you can live with the rear sights or modify them to suit someone on the firearms for sale had his musket front sight dovetailed. You could put one of the target front sights from tow.

Shooting a pocket navy vs an 1851 navy

Howdy, funny coincidence I was shooting my Uberti 1851 Navy 36 today. It shot @ 5-6 " high with 15-20 grains of 3f but I was able to file doen the tip of the hammer. It shouldn't affect teh nipple strike area and now shoots point of aim at 25 yds. I have a medium to med/large hand 71/2 to 8...
