Griswold cast iron - WOW! $$$$$

Good for you that more than one collector saw it or it might have gone cheap. Did your jaw drop to the floor when you saw how the bidding was going? Clutch

    Uncles Borelight

My uncle, eph289 on this board, is working over a .58 cal muzzleloader he built 20+ years ago. It sat in my gunsafe for almost that many years and had a chain of owners. I'm afraid that in my youth I might not have cleaned it well enough for extended storage. Uncle did his best to lap out the...

    BALL comes down when?

Establishing a common line is a great use for that laser level you got for Christmas. Monofilament ( (Fishing)line works also. Clutch

HAZMAT FEE for Caps and Powder

Govermental regulations come with costs. Most you never see because they are buried in the product or service you buy. In this case it is right out in front for you to see. It would be interesting to learn the fee structure as in what the shipper (seller) and the transport service charge...

    BALL comes down when?

1/2 the diameter of ball past the end of your gun barrel. From there it falls just as fast as if you dropped it. What changes the results is we generally shoot upwards so the rate of climb tends to mitigate the rate of fall. Unfortuantly the rate of climb is linear excluding air resistance...

    Powder Measures weigh different

Keep in mind that black powder is a bit finicky on how you pour it into a volumetric measurer. BP cartridge reloaders use a drop tube to get more to fit in their cases. I've always put my flask at the same point above my measurer and poured in the powder at same rate. I'd be interested to...

there MUST be a reason why they bend barrels..right?

It is a way to deal with the problem. Years ago, I bought a .58 from a guy. Way too long and heavy so I chopped off 7 inches. Darn barrel had run out on drilling. Muzzle end is off center. Wished I never had done it. Now for your problem, I'd move front and rear which will go opposite ways...

    Powder Crunching

I give it a firm packing but don't beat it to death. BP doesn't seem to mind. My experience with pyrodex it looser is better. Part of the reason I went to black. Clutch

GO-JO as patch lube and cleaner

Seems like it could work. I know if you leave the top off of the tub it doesn't evaporate so it must not have a bunch of water in it. It tends to turn a bit brown but still works. Might be interesting to read about all the things that definitely don't work. Clutch

    duplex loading

I've made the switch to black and don't plan to go back. However, I have a few cans of pyrodex that I need to do something with. I switched because pyrodex is plain finicky. Compress too much, no boom, do it right click-delay-boom. For those that use bp as an igniter charge, what are the...

    First order of Goex

I always wondered what kind of pressure comes out of using bp + pyrodex. I wouldn't mind stretching out some black powder so I could use up a few cans of pyrodex I'm not likely to ever shoot straight. Clutch

    First order of Goex

One thing I've noticed about RS is that if you seat your ball too firm, you tend to get poor or no ignition. Clutch

    Steel Pipe for barrels???

I could see a guy building a liner using hydraulic tubing. As far as pipe, maybe, here is a chart of schedule 160 pipe. http://www.pennusa.com/pennpage/directory/spec/b361016s.htm I used to work with 60,000 psi plumbing but the darn id's are too small for gun work. Clutch

5 Shots or shoot till ya get 5 on paper

That was a nasty thing to do to you. If someone pulled that stunt at my club it would be a race to see who could throw the bum out first. We might just drag the jerk back in a few times just to toss him back out. Clutch

Bass Pro Shop has Black (Gold) Powder

I paid $20 dollars two months ago for Goex. The can I just used up was marked $15 dollars and had been purchased sometime prior to 1999 at the same store. I was happy to be able to buy a can retail w/o having to search all over the state. To add to the difficulties of dealing with this stuff...

    Made with a file

Thanks for sharing the pictures. I read recently in a 1919 5th edition of Machinerys Handbook that a good file will remove 12 cubic inches of metal. The amount of strokes is way up there though. My uncle built me a underhammer of his design recently and spent a lot of time filing parts. I'm...

What is a resonable time to wait on TOTW?

If the website said it was in stock, not very long at all. So far if their website said they had it, I got it < 7 days. The suprizing thing was having to wait (knew it) for barrel staples. How do you run out of those things? Clutch
