    My Lancaster 50cal build

Bioprof is right first you need to determine where the touch hole will be located. To do this reinstall your breech plug, run a dowel or ramrod down the barrel till it bottoms on the breech face. Using an knife blade scribe the rod/dowel at the muzzle. Take a black or blue sharpie marker and...

    gm barrel

First thing I'd do is pick up either Chuck Dixon's Book or Peter Alexanders Book on Longrifle construction. I know your not building a rifle but the books discuss installing a breech plug, cutting dovetails for under lugs and sights. Your barrel is held on by one or two slotted under lugs...

    Tapping Barrel For Breech Plug

My only advice is use a three tap set, taper, plug and bottoming. Use tapping fluid and support the tap with a tap center. When using the plug and bottoming taps make sure to remove the tap and clear out the chips often, especially when your near the shoulder. You might think its hard to snap a...

    Frontier Carving Shoppe, Lebanon, Pa

Can't say if they are still around. If your looking for a pre-carved stock there are several places to look at. All the ones listed have a web-site. Pecatonica River Long Rifle Supply, they have a nice selection of styles, the stocks for my first two rifles came from here. Gunstocks Plus...

    Will lock fit?

Need some more information. First is your lock area of your stock already mortised for the lock? If it is, the supplier you bought it from should be able to tell you what locks fit the mortise. (small siler, queen anne, etc)

    .58 Rifled Fowler as Build?

While I have never seen a "rifled fowler" there are plenty of examples of "smooth rifles". A smooth rifle looks like a normal rifle, the only difference is the lack of rifleing. If you are looking for something clean, you could build a "Shimmel" using a rifled octagon to round barrel. A...

    cover up inletting flaws

The best material is a sliver of maple (this is why you save all your scraps). Split/cut off a sliver of maple (try to match the grain) and glue it into place with yellow carpenters glue. Clamp if possible (spring clamps work well, just pad the jaws) and clean up any ooze out. You may need to...

    Christian Springs

Rich is correct it is "Christians Springs". My current project is a Christians Springs style rifle based on RCA Vol. 1 no 43, 44 & 45 (44 & 45 signed by Oerter, No. 43 attributed to Oerter) and the Oerter rifle shown on the website mentioned. The rifle in the website was also featured in the...

    A Little Better I Think

Cosmoline, it looks allot better than your first photos. The one thing I see that may cause you problems in the very last photo there looks to be a gap between the rear of the barrel and the stock. You need to have full contact between the rear of the barrel and the stock. A big gap here can...

    Maple wood question

While these are not definitive tests, they can help. First off is the thumb nail test, if you can easily dent the wood with your thumb nail, it probably red maple. If your tumb nail glides across the surface leaving a kind of shiney groove is probably sugar maple. Next the gouge test, take a...

    Fowler kit gun Jim Chambers?

Welcome! I hate to rain on someones parade, but building a Chambers kit as a first project is a big under taking. Not that it can't be done, but if you don't have any gunbuilding skills (wood and metal working) its going to be hard. The first thing to do is purchase "The Gunsmith of Grenville...

    Pa State Championship 8-22&23

Old Salt, Sorry to hear you didn't have a good time at the PA State Shoot. At most club matches in PA they have a "Marksman" match for novices, you shoot against other novices unitl you win one or two regular matches, depending on the club rules. Your right the State Shoot brings out the best...

    wood carving tools

The best advice I can give is buy good quaility tools. Its better to have six good tools then a dozen cheap ones that are made out of poor steel. They cost more upfront, but its worth it in the long run. Along with the tools get the items you need to take care of them, slip stones, etc. I prefer...

    Buffalo Bill Commemorative coin

Just a tought, but instead of just drilling a hole in the stock and seting the coin into it. How about setting it into the lid of a cap box? The lid could be bored or drilled to accept the coin, which could be press fitted or soldered into place. This way you could see both sides.

connecting front sight blade to brass mount

You need to solder it with silver solder. There are two types of silver solder, high temp and low temp. The high temp type (refer to the melthing point) is available from Brownells you'll need a MAPP gas torch to get the parts hot enought to melt the solder. The high temp has a very high...

    Newbie Question

You may want to consider a Lehman style rifle, has the plains rifle look, but is a much easier build as it uses a standard breech plug, barrel is pinned and uses longrifle architecture.

    13/16 Smoothbore barrel ?

I don't think you'll be able to find one as the resulting barrel would be very thin walled. 50 caliber in 13/16th is the largest caliber I've seen. Your going to have to talk to one of the custom barrel builders, if they feel the combination is unsafe they will tell you.

    Can't stop the rust

First how old was your baking soda? Go buy a new box, then card off the heavy stuff make a paste with warm water and soda and scrub the barrel, rise with hot water then repeat. After your done stick the barrel in a bucket and using gloves scald it with boiling water from the tea kettle. When she...

    Rock hard sugar maple AHHHH!

Don't forget your edged tools. Two of my favorite tools for shaping are my Stanley low angle block plane and spokeshave. Both will cut the curliest hardest maple as long as the blades are sharp. If your getting tear out just skew the tool.

    metal to wood fit question

As everyone has said try to get the closest fit you can get. Much easier to scrape away a little wood then to have to put it back.
