Thoughts on .40 Cal for squirrels?

Here in SC 40cal is the largest cal you can use for squirrels and 36cal the smallest for deer on WMA land. I built mine for squirrels and when a hog comes by I can pop it too.

    First build, first love

I'm getting that feeling and she's only been to the range twice.

    Range report need input.

I think I was a little disappointed and thinking the tighter patch would bring it tighter. But I forgot that last time I was only shooting 48 yds and roughly the same size group...so the tighter patch did tighten it up. the first time out with thin patch I tried 50 then 55 grains and notice it...

    Range report need input.

one of our two outdoor ranges is close have to get there before daylight to get a spot. All the benches were taken, but plan on it the next trip. Still getting the feel for it.

    Range report need input.

Second trip for the first build 40 cal today. First trip was to test function of the rifle and get a feel for it. She stayed minute of box out to 74yds without having to adjust sights, so I was happy. Todays trip was to try and tighten things up and test some experimental bullets. The first...

    Preferred Side Lock Barrel Length

One thing about the longer barrels of years gone by is the powder they had to use. I found out my barrel on my 40 cal is just perfect at 37-3/4" because I only hit the kitchen ceiling about 3 times so far with the ramrod cleaning it.

Best way to fix a chipped stock

I'm a big fan of tite bond glue but think Medium thick CA is your best bet if the piece fits.

    Building, lessons learned

I think that came out pretty darn good, especially for the first build. Your patch job at the wrist I had to go back and look for, can barely make it out looks natural. Only think that stand out and could be the picture is the dip at the side panel.

    1711/41 Skiloper rifle

Dusty With that large cutout for the snail breech are you going to find one to fit? Patented breeches seem to be getting on the slim side of availability....common ones that is.

    CVA Bobcat

My first was the CVA bobcat, It shot round ball real well. I thought I was wasting my money when I paid $60 brand new from Bass Pro at the time. But it was a good gun for learning about muzzle loading. Dang just think I could double my money I spent on it. I added rags a little lead and some...

    First Build First Smoke.

Aqua-fortis from Tow and Tru-oil. I had it perfect just before it fell, I guess I rushed it the second time thru.

    First Build First Smoke.

In this video You get to see the first attempt at smoke and then it's first smoke. (I did not get the cap all the way down on the nipple as they were very tight on the Nipple). 50gains of FFFg triple7 powder bumped up to 55Gains. Pre-made patch that were too large for the .395 balls, but the...

    My gun parts collection

Must say that butt plate with the huntsman and hounds is my favorite. I would have to build a gun around it. Good thing I don't own it. Very nice collection love seeing it and the different side from what we typically have here.

    Marman underhammer build

It's coming along, I like what I see. Does it have a half cock position on it? On turning the barrel round I wouldn't do it, Not because of safety issue (idk) but for the ease of dove tailing or screws used for sights, lugs, and thimbles.

Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Encampment

I had to go to the visitor center page of the link to find a map where this one was. If anyone is wondering Virgina is the state this one is in.

    Eastern upcoming

OK I've never been to one. But I can tell you where to start helping get new people. In the head of all these post should be the STATE NAME or City and date. You guys and gals throw yada yada name out there and think that is good enough. Give people more info to go on in the post heading...

    Ram rod channel specs

With the barrel breeched, place your ramrod down the barrel to the face of the breech plug, you will need at least an inch sticking out the barrel. Mark it and measure it, that's how you can figure it out.

Help me decide on my next build

I would defiantly go with the smooth bore then. 20-24ga...heck ya. I would do that one first and work on your 40cal also but fancy it up since you will be all practiced up doing the smooth bore work.
