Asking for any info on this rifle.

That’s a mid-19th Century Longrifle. It could be post Civil War. So....1850-1870ish..... The styling is rather ambiguous, at least to me but I’m not up on late percussion guns. It’s Eastern. I would put it East of the Mississippi and North of the Ohio. It could be Mid-Western or North...

    Hawken Worth

An original JP Beck would sell at the local tacticool pawn/gun shop for 400 bucks. It might hang there for a year. Nobody in there would know what it is. The same gun at a KRA show or high end auction would sell for 10s of thousands maybe a lot more. You can say the same about contemporary...

    Sex in Muzzle Loading Terminology?

It’s called lasciviousness. I’m all for a good joke from time to time but if you don’t watch it, it can take over your vocabulary, and the way you think and talk. It can get really old really quick and make a person seem kind of creepy and sleazy. It’s no fun listening to someone when...

    Chopped Flintlocks. How early?

Our knowledge is not just based on surviving examples. Many survivors could have been modified during their period of use. Many, unfortunately a great many have been modified or restored more recently. The Shrieck * Rifle has been continuously modified since the 18th Century. That rifle has...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

Full or people ???!!!! Absolutely not!!!! The nazis did just that in Lidice 1942 and in at least 2 occasions in France 1944. This is not counting the Einzengroupen (sic spelling) on the Eastern Front.

    1750 period rifle

Have you read the description in the Deerslayer? The rifle is kind of a mystery. It belonged to a sea faring man. One can guess that’s it’s European of origin. Yes I know of Cooper and the time he lived yet the description is very good. Maybe it was accidental but the description is still good...

What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

By far the church burning scene in the patriot is unforgivable and is a travesty. The British/ Loyalists in the South committed plenty of atrocities but..... The NAZI SS burning of an occupied church is not one of them. For this reason, the Patriot is unwatchable for me. If you want to see...

    Toilet bowl cleaner

Some toilet cleaners are muriatic acid. It can remove rust but it can chlorinate the steel causing irreparable scaling and rust. Think Chlorine bleach.

    1750 period rifle

Cooper actually gives a pretty fair description in the Deer Slayer. Such a rifle ; although “credible and likely”, right now and probably for the foreseeable future is a work of fiction much like Hawkeye’s Killdeer. A rifle like this was built for the 1992 LOTM movie. It was short rifle...

    Chopped Flintlocks. How early?

I’m reading through this and for some reason I’m thinking about Conan Swords and...... “Pappy” with a battery on his shoulder. 🤔🧐

    Gunstock Blanks

My 44 inch barreled rifles come in right at 5’. This ‘48inch barreled rifle blank is 5’6” 46” barreled rifle comes in at 5’3”. ‘5 would be perfect for a “42 barrel and a 44 is doable if the ends are good. It’s all a judgement call in what you get out of a log. Barrels longer than 42” are...

    accuracy

OK.... Let’s really look at this with the info we have. This is what I would be looking for. “I loaded my musket with cloth patches in the manor of a rifle.” Now when you get into “that guy used cloth”.... How did he use it? A witness sometimes 50 years later can make the fellow do a lot...

I just got back from the Alabama Kentucky Longrifle Show

I got some wood for my Feather Gun project. I enlarged a photo by hand a few years back and made a paper pattern. The comb still needs a little tweaking on my pattern but it was enough for me to get a piece of wood. I did not really think about it but stocks for a 48” barrel are little...

    Nice tools

I’m assuming you have a bench and vise. Stocking..... For stocking a rifle you’ll need the following. 1/2” flat bench chisel 1/4” flat bench chisel ( by far my most used chisel) A 3/8, Swiss 8/7 or slightly smaller round gouge (for lock noses and ramrod grooves....some times general inletting...
