pyrodex in the pan / BP in the barrel okay?

Well if you don't mind it not functioning pyrodex will be OK. However I think you will find Pyrodex is nearly useless in a flintlock, the ignition temperature is too high for Pyrodex to be reliably ignited by the sparks from the lock, and it is also not reliable as a main charge, the best bet is...

Less Then 50 Lbs. of Black Powder

Roundball writes "I just realized I never heard back from you on that Bob...so they will also sell over the counter? Loose cans or case only?" J&J sells case lots and you need to contact a day or so prior so they can get what you want from the main storage area. Wonderful folks to deal with I...

Should I leave powder in the flask?

Magumba asks, "Should I leave black powder in the powder flask or primer pen from week to week or for a month at a time during hunting season?" I've done this for decades, unless there are issues with children or other unauthorized people getting into it there is no reason to empty your prime...

Why do you use real BP?

Please do not take this as an insult or in a negative light but if your friend needs to ask that question he will not understand the answer. Using black powder is a tangiable link to the past and is very special for that, at least to me. If it was just about velocity and enegery I would be...

    need powder

Here are a couple places to try for powder, last time I looked both would sell less than 25 lb lots, however the hazmat fee is the same for 5 lb as it is for 25lb, so the more powder you buy the less per pound the fee is, also powder Inc varies the price depending on how much powder you buy...

    Brass frame wear and tear

Echo, You can very likley shoot your .44 brass framed revolver with those 20 gr loads of black powder forever with little chance of shooting the piece loose. I would however stay away from full house loads and things like T-7. Keep the pressure low and enjoy shooting it.

2 types of powder for the main charge

A couple observations on duplex loading. First when Ned Roberts wrote about "modern" smokeless powder he was NOT refering to what we in the 21st century would call "modern" Please do not ever put any modern smokeless in our traditional guns. Second as to a duplex load of genuine black powder and...

    Cabela's BP Revolvers

Well if I had avoided anything made by Pietta I would not have two very nice 1851 Navy repros. The only thing I did was to replace the nipples which I will do no matter who makes the revolver, I am a big fan of Treso nipples also I picked up some spare springs etc from VTI assuming (Wrongly)...

    Cabela's BP Revolvers

Last Spring I bought a pair of steel frame 1851's from Cabela's. I use them for CAS and have shot them a lot, with no problems. Just for reference they are the Wild Bill version, with fakey white wanna be ivory grips and some engraving on the barrel as well as the standard cylinder scene...

Need ideas for simple, bare bones builder's bench.

There was a gentleman at Dixon's Fair this year who was selling a bench very much like the one pictured in Thornapple's post. I think he was asking $300 for it set up ready to go. His had a vice mounted at the center of the bench with an leather padded 2x6 or so adjustable arm at each end...
