    Production rate?

Rabbit: Last time I poured it was about 75 in half an hour - so right on your pace. Not rushed really, just once you get going it just sorta flows - flows, git it? Ok sorry. :barf: Mike F

Help for New Guy Fitting Lock to Stock

You are correct to get the bolster to fit tight to the barrel, percussion or no. The flash from the caps will send junk into any gap. As stated by Shortstring, do the inletting in stages. I use inletting black applied with a stencil brush (a little goes a long way. Take the lock apart (use a...

    Permalyn sealer , opinions ?

zukeeper1 Have used it and like it. Five coats of sealer, three hand rubbed with the finish and one last coat hand rubbed with the sealer. Produces a nice satin finish that is as tough as they come. Mike F

    Drilled hole crooked...

Recon: Don't feel bad, did exactly the same thing. Follow what Zonie said and no one but you will know - I certaily don't tell anyone there is a hardwood dowel under my butt plate. Not sure that sounds right, dowel in my butt plate. Oh well... Mike F

    Another Lehigh Finished

Chris: Very very nice  And how are your nerves after all that incised carving? Any slips hidden in there? :hmm: Love the figure after the trigger guard. Inletting looks super tight. Mike F.

    Jim Bridger .58 Hawken

Oldwolf: Back to the original question. The kit is fun to build, if a little touchy in assembly(half stock stuff). The finished product is a hoot to shoot. I got one of the Goodion 60 cal tapered barrels. I shoot about 70 grain at 50 yards - offhand. Not a lot of kick. Just for fun I have...

    Mink Oil for Patch Lube?

nw hunter: Mink Oil from TOTW is good stuff. The "use on shoes" stuff has petrolium in it or is petrolium based - will foul your barrel if used as a patch lube. Mike F

    New Southpaw from MA

Pilgrim: Hey: where in Massachusetts? I shoot at the Ipswich Rod and Gun. As for powder, you need a Firearms Identification Card for black powder (if you buy in MA) - for the trouble a FID just go see your local police chief and get a licence. As for supplies - Track of the Wolf will...

    Pinning Ferrule to Ramrod

Comus: When using an iron tip I use a steel brad (nail)that I cut off the head end and round off the pointy end on the drill press with a file. Pick a brad that is a press fit to the 1/16 hole. First I use a v block and a multi flute counter sink to put in a drill start / counter sink - keep...

    questions from a beginner

Outlan: Ditto on the LMF Permalyn sealer and finish. Puts on a very sturdy finish that is easy to do and looks great. I would also recommend the LMF stains - with a whole bunch of LMF stain thinner added. LMF stains will darken with additional coats, so start thin (light). Mike F

    Houston, we have a problem!

Mike: Fill, stain and charge more for all the time and trouble it took to "simulate" real worm holes   Mike F

    flint lock pistole kit.

mudd turtle: I have a Japanese pistol (flinter) I got thirty five years ago. Barrel and lock are good, but the rest I messed up trying to "snap" the kit together (what did I know, I was young and had no patience). This winter I plan to restock and remount the lock and barrel with new wood and...

    gun kits (first time builds)

16 Gauge: First the basic decision. As Comus pointed out, you have a choice here and it depends on what you want as an outcome. Is your basic desire to learn to build a gun or to shoot a gun? If you want to shoot a gun (90%) and have it unique to you (10%) then go with the factory...

    Track of the Wolf kits

billholmes: I did a Bridger kit, it was,as others have said, a collection of rough done parts. Inletting is enough to let you know exactly what is the correct location of the part, but with enough work to be done that it could be screwed up fairly handily. I found that by practicing anything...

Stupid things I have seen people do with a Muzzleloader, or while shooting a muz

I am sorry, but this stuff is just too funny. This is better than the Sunday comics. I have tears in my eyes. Mike

    IT HURTS!!

oldarmy: Yea.... Have had the same problem. Kit, well yea it's a kit..... :hmm: but there are kits, as in snap together and sand... and there are "piles of parts" that were sold as a "kit", see you in 150 to 200 hours :shocked2: . Have a hard time explaining the differance to a "modern"...

    Hawken kits

shifty: I built the TOTW Bridger kit. Get the plans, get books, do your research, take your time - came out really nice. Used a Goodoien barrel, not the Colerain. No real issues with the kit. Inlets were 90% done - and in the right places or with a little extra wood, parts were rough but just...
