    the dangers of lead

my mothers got a coe-worker who is starting to get on my nerves. he is a self proclaimed muzzleloading expert who keeps telling her that handling lead is gonna kill me... i keep explaining to her that leads onley dangerous if you either get it too hot (fumes) or get it in your mouth. but this...

i gave into my fear and bought powder

its a shame they wouldnt let me order 30 pounds, really coulda used 10 pounds of FF powder. ill stash away 5 pounds each of F, FF, and FFF just in case the nazi's really do come after BP with any effort. good thing real BP doesnt have a shelf life. heres hopen they forget all about BP! -matt

    CVA patch grease

i went to the range today and gave it a shot, after the first shot the gun became hard to load. this gun is NEVER hard to load! so i dumped the grease like a bad habit. the cabelas pistol lube worked really well! i suspect its just oxi-yoke wonder lube thats been repackaged (smells the same)...

i gave into my fear and bought powder

i have a couple muskets and im looking at getting a large bore matchlock. i like F powder for these as it feels more correct in the 18th century guns. with this 9 pounds ill have 10 pounds of F powder which wont last long as these muskets eat powder like you wouldnt believe. my 71 cal musket...

    Maxi-Balls

i normally allow for a couple grain variation. my recent batch of .570 balls weighed in at 276-280 with the average being around 277.5. so i decided to cull all the balls below 277 (i think maby 10 balls were culled out of over 100). the heavier the projectile, the more variation you will see...

    CVA patch grease

i got the patch lube in a CVA single-shot shooters kit with a copyright date of 1984. i bought the kit along with a bunch of other muzzleloading supplies from a coeworker whos grandfather had passed away. i just picked up some black denim from walmart that measures around .019-.020 to try in my...

    percussion caps

another vote for flint. even a novice can break enough chert to get a couple usuable gun flints. without skill your success rate will be very low but in a tight spot its better then a caplock without caps. -matt

    Schutzen Powder ?

i shoot both Schuetzen and KIK at the moment. both shoot great and i havent seen any big difference. schuetzen was my choice powder for a long time because it was the cheapest available. i havent shot any other brands though so i cant compare to it anything else. -matt

    decent deal on lead

lead is easy to ship, people use USPS flat rate boxes to ship up to around 65 pounds for $12. as far as how soft the lead is. if i can scratch the lead with my finger nail its good enough for me. -matt

    decent deal on lead

if the lead turns out hard, ill simply use it in my smooth bore musket. my 71 cal musket eats lead like its goen outa style. a day at the range can easily eat around 3 pounds of lead (balls weigh in at 1.1 oz). i do need to call around to local stained glass shops and roofing companies to see...

    decent deal on lead

for those of you in need of lead, ive found a decent deal on ebay. its 12.75 per 15 pounds but it looks like hes onley got 90 pounds left. i bought 60 pounds for $63 shipped. since im sure im not allowed to link it. go to ebay and search: Lead Ingots SOFT lead it will be the one that lists em...

Matchlocks in action at Australian M/L Championships

if you can find one for a decent price, the miroku japanese snapping matchlock had an interesting provision to manage the cord. i almost landed one on gunrboker a little while back but someone decided they wanted it way more then me. -matt

    Smooth bore accuracy question

rifling doesnt seem to make a big difference out to 50 yard. my 71 cal musket will easily shoot a 3" group at 25 yards with an unpatched ball. most smooth bore guns are considered accurate enough to hunt with out to 65 yards. now the above info is for long barreled guns with a stock. your...

    Range report.

35 grains of 2F is about the same as 30 grains of 3F. thats a pretty hot load for a brass framed revolver. as for your gun shooting better with fouling, that usually means your patch/ball combo isnt tight enough. try a thicker patch or a larger ball. sounds like ya had fun, i wont be able to...
