    P-Dogs

There are varmint around here- there holes will break livestock legs. Not to many people eat them on account of the plague and all. Lakota used to eat them. My rancher friend has eaten one and is not impressed :-) I don't get into them big- I'm kind of like you - if you don't eat why...

    P-Dogs

Anybody else here ever hunt prairie dogs with muzzleloaders? Me, my father in law and his rancher friend practiced shooting prairie dogs about two winters ago. It was a blast. Although I was the only one shooting traditional (with my 1861 springfield) the other two guys were shooting open...

    hello

Good to hear from you- sorry slow response, just noticed your response. In addition to black powders I like to fix up old (more modern rifles). That is a turkish mauser I fixed up myself. Did my own bluing, stock from boyd's, some other mods by gunsmith. It can hold dime sized groups at 100...

Good to also know another South Dakotan- a good friend of mine got me into it but moved away (BTW, which part of SoDak are you in?) The only other hunters I know who do muzzeloader use those $#line contraptions, lol! I got my kit today and it seems the dixie hawken has a good set of steel...

What tools do you cut the notch with - I assume a triangular file and go slow but I want to make sure I am using the right tool for the job. Thanks for the input everyone - I borrowed my father in laws rifle from the 50's with a buckhorn- he explained the ranges same way others have and I...

I was kind of thinking of one of these, seeing if folks had used them (or even wondering how exactly the adjustments went). I'm also wondering without a "notch" how precise they can be- good enough for deer at 100 yards? http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/879/1/RS-HA-5...

I'm starting a new kit build - Dixie .50 cal percussion. I'm thinking on upgrading the sights as many hawken kits (not sure about this one) have plastic sites- yuck. I have good vision and my primary use would be hunting. I live to far from any black powder groups to my knowledge to shoot...

Need help on my first choice.

I was going through the same dilemma recently. I just went with the dixie hawken- I liked its lighter profile for the miles of walking I do while hunting and I guess the brasswork caught my eye, even if it is less authentic for the common guy to have in the 19th century. If I like this kit, I...

Dixie Works Hawken in .,50 cal. It was on sale (wanted .54 but they were out of stock) I really like the hawken so decided to go that route. Someday I want to do an expensive flintlock from one of those nice kits but right now $$ is short with two kids in daycare :-) I've done a lot of...

    help- 1861 musketoon

Hey guys- I've tried the larger musket balls and they do work better. I've decided not to mess with the sights on the musketoon for now - to keep it original. Instead I've sold on of my extra bolt action mausers I don't care for and ordered a gun kit. I figure it will be fun to build a...

I took a quick picture of what I am working with. I'm looking it some more and not sure if a tang sight would work... but maybe some folks have done so :-)

    sight options

I'm looking to fix my enfield sites with a dovetail base up front but also am pondering some additional sighting upgrades. I like peeps and I think the tang sights are nice period looking but not sure if they could mount in with the existing hardware (1861 enfield musketoon by euroarms)...

    hello

Thanks everyone, already lots of good advice on the percussion forum. Glad to talk with other folks who love old smokepoles. Oh here's my deer from this year for those asking about hunting in my area: (although taken with rifle so slightly off topic). I'm still working on getting my buck...

euroarms- got it new a bout 2-3 years ago. That makes sense with the mini's will have to check with it. Looking down the barrel I am not to sure that the front site was centered properly but that could be my imagination... there appears no adjustment on that so I might be SOL on that front...

There is a chance it fell out in my truck... I'll have to look. I guess I might have to try some of those larger ones from track the wolf.. I want to mention that I was also dealing with some temp extremes in the field. Loading it in daytime - 50's and it getting to the teens by the time the...

Well might not be the most accurate but I used calipers. In the grooves .581 tightest dimensions not on grooves .577 My maxi bullets that definataly are lose measure .573 The LEE real bullets that I think are loose are .577 and some traditional mini bullets I got are .577 I should say...

Hey I have as story. It was the winter before I was getting married and my wife (I love her) wanted venison at our wedding. I planned to get one with rifle but a big blizzard stopped that from happening and by the time I could get out it was muzzleloader only season... So I grabbed my...

    hello

Thanks- I live in great hunting country. The town I live in is the county seat with a population of 500 :-) Lots of mixed grasslands, badlands and forested river valleys. I've taken good Mule deer, White Tail deer, and pronghorn locally. We even have elk moving in but I have not drawn a tag...

I'll get my calibers out when I get a chance to see if I can measure things. Where can you purchase different sizes? My father in law is saying its a waste of time and to get an inline. I don't want to give into the "dark side", lol :-)
