    1861 colt replacement barrels

oh, how funny you are, assuming i'm not going to be using any files. i take it your persona is one of a mountain man who has no time for 'them silly city folk'? perhaps, had some thought been employed, you might have realized that i'm covering my bases out of curiosity? that maybe i'm doing a...

    1861 colt replacement barrels

wasn't asking for suggestions for repair, if you'd actually read the post, i was looking into replacement barrels and other suppliers. as a just in case. but hey, reading is overrated, don't feel bad.

    Hand Forged Trade Points

the bowyer's bible volume two or three has a section on it. very informative. not terribly hard, either, except for taking care with the thin steel stock.

    stuff you can't live without.

ahahaha... that's handy. i think i saw one of those numbers at wal-mart, now that i think of it... looked handy but heavy. yeah, i've become one of the two camp cooks when we do our family trip in the late summer, because, as it turns out, besides my father in law, i'm the only one who can...

    HELP!!! Cannon Class Problems

ah, is what they're doing called 'being true to period'? perhaps we shouldn't change it, because then we'd be corrupting the history with our modern ways and means... :haha: kidding, kidding. *dons nomex*

    1861 colt replacement barrels

i've got an 1861 colt navy in .36, but it's got a flaw in the bore, right where the sight post hole was drilled. i don't know yet how this affects accuracy, but better safe than sorry, i suppose. you guys would know best in here, but where can i get a replacement for a fair price? right now...

before I go out and spend 60 bucks on caps...

well, i found out that not all caps are made equal(in size). this info, on one of my posts, was quite interesting. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showpost.php?post/687879/ you might want to look into other brands as well.

    Knife steel material

yeah, i'd noticed the hole in the back, but i'm not a fan of sectional heating, i guess. too many things to go wrong, to me. the guys who do demonstration smithing at the puyallup fairgrounds have a smarter forge for longer pieces, to me.. it's a similar design, but tilted on its side. seems...

    stuff you can't live without.

yeah, i've been down the single item and one knife road, but as time has gone on my belt knife has gotten bigger and less usable for cooking work(it's currently either my 13" tanto knife by cold steel, or a kukri knife i made myself), so i carry a cooking knife seperate, as well as a fillet...

    stuff you can't live without.

just curious about which cooking items you're never without when you go off hunting/camping/etc. i suppose i've got just a couple... my 10 inch cast iron skillet, my 2 quart stainless steel pot/kettle(with percolator option). between those two items i've made just about anything and everything...

    Shooting Sticks

i've thought about making a tripod for a long time... i've tied field expedient ones for various reasons in the past. it'd certainly be a stable shooting platform.

    Question about caps?

i've heard tell that the caps back then were far tougher and heavier built than they are now. even up to a few decades ago, it seems. i think the lightening of the material is a cost thing. they're trying to keep the costs the same so their profit rises, but we're the ones that suffer.

    Knife steel material

yeah, the high output is the one upshot to the design. the way he puts it together, it burns itself out inside of a year. if you're not on top of replacing that insulation on a regular basis, it'll melt down one day. the verticle tube design isn't all that great for doing long pieces either...
