    Trade gun shooting low.

Sir, If you want to shoot your trade gun like a long bow by using instinctive shooting, I think many have given you good advise. Sure you can adjust how much of the barrel you see when about to shoot but to achieve consistent accuracy, your form must be perfect every time....when seconds...

bare ball, how close is too close

A friend of mine shared the quote concerning the topic of historical loading methods....this is from Georgia in 1735...I combined that with the quote from Adair concerning the used of "chewed" round balls, in my attempt to replicate a historic load for my Carolina gun. I have shot smooth-bores...

bare ball, how close is too close

Yes...I keep some of the Spanish moss in my shot pouch. As far as treating it for chiggers...I have had no problems with chiggers bothering me from the supply I keep in my otter skin shot pouch. If there are any in the moss.....lets just say they are on death row....I don't think they survive...

Sir, While the European powers you mention did impact what was locally available gun wise, the English & French were the major players in the 18th Cen. deer skin trade economy, the Spanish not so much.Based on archaeological evidence, the predominate gun parts found through out Alabama village...

    Alabama smoothbore?

Dear sir, I will second & third the suggestion of a "Carolina Gun" other wise labeled as an English type"G" in the book Colonial Frontier guns by T.M. Hamilton. If you go to the Archives & History in Montgomery, AL you can see an up close reproduction gun made by Benny C.( take a camera &...

Where to get a quality smooth bore flintlock

Sir, By stating that you want to stay away from production guns....I gather that you want to invest your money into not only a reliable functioning gun but also one that is historically correct. If an English Carolina trade gun is something that you might consider here are a few names for...

    .610 chewed balls

In honor to this thread I thought this quote from Adair's History of the American Indians was in order! "The leader, on each side, immediately blows the small whistle he carries for the occasion, in imitation of the ancient trumpet, as the last signal of engagement. Now hot work begins -- The...

    northwest trade gun color

So is it a English "Type G/ Carolina" trade gun or a Northwest trade gun you are planning to build? If you are building a Carolina gun go to Jack Brooks web site & check out those pics. The guns he shows are painted/stained with a dark red finish. I have a Carolina gun that was built with Jack...

    northwest trade gun color

Sir, I think you just about covered all the historic color( Red, Blue, Spotted, ect) choices concerning the type G/Carolina trade gun. I am not aware of any other color type being mentioned. It is my understanding the the type "G"/Carolina gun as defined by T. M. Hamilton is a different...

As one other person responded I make my own arrow and I make my bows out of hickory...I use the excess to make tappered ramrods. I have a 46" barrel in one gun and a 48" in the others....I made both of my ramrods. If you make them from scratch you have the front of the rod a larger...

    Sitting Fox Kit

(longest Barrel they offer is only a 42") This is one of my single biggest problems with most kits avaliable. The companies in question will advertise these guns as to the most historically correct, ect. but when you look at original gun barrel lenghts most in the mid 18th cen. are 44" or...

    R.E. Davis Fine Fusil

I own a gun built from that kit. It is a fine kit with quality components however....be aware the barrel is HEAVY. The gun has a 48" barrel(as it should, many originals are longer than that) but the meat is in the breech area and mid barrel. The barrel even has the 1/4 flat sighting plane as...

    Northwest Trade Gun vs Fowler?

Uncle, I hope you are well! Will try to give you a call soon. As to this topic: I will agree that the pictured North West gun is not as flowing in stock architecture compared to pictured "fowler" but....one should not automatically assume that all trade guns are "crude" affairs. Both the...
